Classical Finish-Correctness. In his Pleasures of Hope, the long poem that first made him famous, and in most of his other poetry except half a dozen martial songs, Campbell manifests an almost slavish subservience to the literary traditions established by Pope and his school. Gosse remarks that when Campbell wrote The Pleasures of Hope he had evidently seen no poetry more modern than that of Johnson, Goldsmith, and Rogers. . . . It was a tame, correct essay in a mode already entirely outw0rn. Hazlitt, on the other hand, praises Campbells fastidious refinement and classic elegance. Mr. Campbell conceives himself called upon, continues Hazlitt, (in these days of critical nicety) to pay exact attention to the expression of each thought and to modulate each line into the most faultless harmony. . . .
