Christian World Imprints/B.R. World of Books, 2013. First edition. Hardcover. New. The book brings the thought of Julia Kristeva to bear on the challenge of sexual differentiation in a world that both privileges difference yet continues to be threatened by otherness. In conversation with feminist theology and Christian ethics, it explores the role and the ramifications of being embodied subjects. The book utilizes Kristeva`s thought to probe the roots of violence against women and how violence continues to shape humanity`s psyche. Kristeva`s contribution to feminist theology and Christian ethics emerges through a comparative analysis with leading feminist theologian Rosemary Radford Ruether. Ruether probes more deeply than most the pervasive misogyny within the Christian tradition. While Kristeva exposes the deeply biological (and so determined) roots of violence against women, her insights provide the needed understanding that can shift the direction of our thought in addressing the threat of the other. The book considers how theology (via Ruether) rather than Kristeva offers the tools to guide us through this opening. From the rear cover: "THE MALE BODY: FEATURES, DESTINIES, EXPOSURES serves as an indispensable and fascinating source of knowledge about the male sex at a time when media attention to manhood has increased and when studies of masculinity have become a significant part of the academic curriculum as well as a popular topic of academic research. Subjects include the historical sources of the American body, adolescent and midlife bodies, bodybuilding, the bodies of popular icons such as rock stars and athletes, AIDS, the black body, and the variety of sexual identities endorsed and disdained by our culture [This] volume gathers together a remarkable range of voices and perspectives on an always-timely topic. The collection begins with essays by Margaret Atwood and John Updike that define the precarious situation of manhood at the end of this millennium and concludes with Susan Bordo's essay examining the discourse of 'manhood' in best-selling books, film, advertising, and political commentary. The book's contributors argue that the male body is not just an anatomical fact but a cultural sign or site that people seek to construct, deconstruct, and reconstruct to fit their values. How this process of shaping occurs can be observed in Joyce Carol Oates's story about a frightened girl and a nude photograph, in Cathy Song's regretful poem about vasectomy, in Philip Lopate's self-portrait as he regards and evaluates the parts of his body, in Margaret Morganroth Gullette's polemical report on the commercial exploitation of midlife bodies, in Rudolf Arnheim's admiring description of an ancient Greek statue that preserves 'a god's perfection.' The anthology also brings examples from 'body history' to bear on the present day: for instance, David R. Slavitt's new translation of Ovid's tale of Narcissus and sociologist Michael S. Kimmel's study of the obsession with physical vitality at the turn of this century both resonate with unsettling immediacy in the context of the values, issues, and obsessions of our own postmodern era. Work and play, anxiety and self-confidence, youth and aging, health and sickness -- all of these contesting conditions are examined in the course of this rich collection of materials. General readers and specialists alike will find abundant new information and insights, and much to argue with as well as much to agree with, in the contents of this engrossing volume.". In his article on his escape from slavery, he wrote that he gave the people what he thought were the best reasons for the concealment of the mode of his fleet. The first reason was, that such writing at some time in the actuality of slavery may be used by the master in contrary to the servant, and preclude the impending fleet of some people who may use the same manner as he did. The second reason was, if doable, still more necessary to muteness such as the printing of information would have put in danger the people and possessions of those who aided. Killing was not more strictly and undoubtedly penalized in the State of Maryland than that of assisting and backing the flight of a servant.

The gathering of the Second Session of the Thirty-ninth Congress might be more correctly made the incident of some solemn statements on the even now thoroughly exhausted in the subject matter of reconstruction.

Rarely has some legislative body been the topic of an unease and more concentrated, or of goals more genuine and heartfelt. There are great reasons for this thoughtful relevance. Issues of infinite time, were unresolved by the final session of Congress, must be resolutely dealt with by this. No political hostility will benefit. The case calls for international affairs.

Frederick Douglass born as Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey was an African-American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, author, and politician. Hardcover. New. ABOUT THE BOOK:- Twentieth century history witnesses many political upheavals in the international arena. History of the inter-war period emerges as an academic discipline and almost becomes an interdisciplinary domain similar to global studies. Students of history delve deep into the trajectories of historical development taking place after the First World War. Hence, the International relations in the inter-war period becomes a fascinating intellectual discourse which invites academicians to incorporate all such issues in their undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Their importance was felt across the years of the century and is still felt relevant. This book has been a noble attempt to discuss all such important international happenings in a limited framework following the onset of the First World War until the closure of the second one. It is in the form of a textbook and every effort has been made to maintain the standard. The language followed is precise and self-convincing. I believe the book in its present shape benefit the learners. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:- Having First Class Academic Career throughout, Dr. Prasanta Kumar Nayak (b.1967) received M.A., M. Phil and Ph. (This book is - ND) devoted to the old question about the arrangement of his poems as we know them. A new basis fro answering it has been created in recent years by interpretations of Roman poetry collectionswhich no longer try to reconstruct the chronology of the poems, but simply take them as they come. Analysis in particular of Augustan libi has repeatedly shown that the interaction of poems develops a continuous discourse which successively unfurls central and subsidiary themes. (...) Beck interprets thematic and structural links between the two groups as evidence that they were composed as two complementary units - here he presents many fine observations (pp.154-288) and concludes that Catullus published poems 1-14 as a libellus, and that 14b-26 followed as a second libellus and foil.' Plato's Four Muses reconstructs Plato's authorial self-portrait through a fresh reading of the Phaedrus, with an Introduction and Conclusion that contextualize the construction more broadly. The Phaedrus, it is argued, is Plato's most self-referential dialogue, and Plato's reference to four Muses in Phaedrus 259c-d is read as a hint at the "ingredients" of philosophical discourse, which turns out to be a form of provocatively old-fashioned mousik. Andrea Capra maintains that Socrates's conversion to "demotic"Ñas opposed to metaphoricalÑmusic in the Phaedo closely parallels the Phaedrus and is apologetic in character, since Socrates was held responsible for dismissing traditional mousik. This parallelism reveals three surprising features that define Plato's works: first, a measure of anti-intellectualism (Plato counters the rationalistic excesses of other forms of discourse, thus distinguishing it from both prose and poetry); second, a new beginning for philosophy (Plato conceptualizes the birth of Socratic dialogue in, and against, the Pythagorean tradition, with an emphasis on the new role of writing); and finally, a self-consciously ambivalent attitude with respect to the social function of the dialogues, which are conceived both as a kind of "resistance literature" and as a preliminary move toward the new poetry of the Kallipolis. Andrea Capra is Assistant Professor of Greek Language and Literature at the University of Milan., Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts and London England: 2015, InterVarsity Press. Wrights Jesus and the Victory of God is widely heralded as one of the most significant and brilliantly argued works in the current third quest of the historical Jesus. In this second volume of his multivolume investigation entitled Christian Origins and the Question of God, Wright uncovers a Jesus that most historians and believers have never met. Rooted and engaged in the soil of Israels history, its first-century plight and its prophetic hope, Wrights portrait of Jesus has set new terms of discourse and debate. Through Wrights lens, familiar sayings and actions of Jesus have fresh meaning. But in the midst of all that is new, Wright also offers a profile of Jesus that bears striking lines of continuity with the Jesus of Christian belief and worship. This resemblance has captured the attention of confessing Christian biblical scholars and theologians. Wrights work thus far is of such consequence that it seemed timely and strategic to publish a scholarly engagement with his reconstruction of the historical Jesus. Like all works in progress, Wrights proposal is still under construction. But its cornerstone has been laid, the foundation has been formed, the pillars and walls are going up, and even if we cannot yet see how the ceiling, roof and parapets will look, there is quite enough to engage the minds of colleagues, critics and other curious onlookers. For the purposes of this book (and in keeping with IVPs own evangelical identity), editor Carey Newman invited scholars who are committed to Christian belief as it has been classically defined to engage Wrights Jesus and the Victory of God. Newman sets the stage with an introduction, and Craig Blomberg offers a critical and appreciative overview of Jesus and the Victory of God. Various facets of Wrights proposal are then investigated by contributors: Paul Eddy on Jesus as prophet, Messiah and embodiment of YahwehKlyne Snodgrass on the parablesCraig Evans on Israel under continuing exileDarrell Bock on the trial and death of JesusDale Allison on apocalyptic languageRichard Hays on ethicsAlister McGrath on the implications for evangelical theologyStephen Evans on methodological naturalism in historical biblical scholarshipLuke Timothy Johnson on Wrights historiography To these essayists Wright extends his grateful dialogue. He gives this spirited and illuminating reply to his interlocuters: The high compliment of having a whole book devoted to the discussion of ones work is finely balanced by the probing, intelligent questions and by the occasional thud of a blunt instrument on the back of ones head. . . . Only once did I look up my lawyers telephone number. After Wright takes his turn, his good friend and frequent partner in debate Marcus Borg offers his appreciative disagreement. Newman then concludes the dialogue with his own reflections on moving from Wrights reconstruction of the historical Jesus to the churchs Christ. A book assessing a scholars work is usually an end-of-career event. But in this case interested readers can look forward with eager anticipation to Wrights next volume in Christian Origins and the Question of God--this one on the resurrection of Jesus. This book examines the nature of today's internal and regional conflicts, together with the systems of global governance that have emerged in response to both of them; the commitment among donor governments and aid agencies to conflict resolution and social reconstruction indicates that war is now part of development discourse; the author argues that the very notion of development has been radicalized in the process, and now requires the direct transformation of third world societies; because conflict is understood as a product of a developmental malaise, underdevelopment itself is now seen as a source of instability; the author argues, however, that transforming the social systems of developing countries is beyond the ability and legitimacy of individual govenments (white pictorial cover with gold lettering, pages slightly tanned, otherwise a bright, clean, tight copy).
