All the volumes contain eye-witness accounts of an analytic and descriptive, but not narrative, character, and are reprinted in their earliest editions (except for those volumes where the original edition was in a language uncommon amongst contemporary European readers, in which cases a translation into a commonly accessible European language has been used). Each edition has a new introduction which sets the work in context and shows why it is important and in addition there is a companion volume which provides a full introduction to the whole subject and a complete index to all the volumes.This work will be of immense value both in making important original sources available to early modern historians of Russia, and also in illustrating the very different mentalities which prevailed, both in what is now Russia, and in Western Europe.
