London: E H Wells, c1898. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 4.5". None. A scarce edition of this collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry written supposedly by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pen-name of an English clergyman named Richard Harris Barham. Illustrated throughout with numerous engraved plates. In 1826 Barham first contributed to Blackwood's Magazine; and in 1837 he began to furnish to a recently-initiated magazine, Bentley's Miscellany, the series of tales (most of them metrical, some in prose) known as The Ingoldsby Legends. These became very popular. They published in a collected form in three volumes between 1840 and 1847, and have since had numerous editions. They may perhaps be compared to Hudibras. The stories are generally whimsical, but based on antiquarian learning. In a calf binding. Externally, generally smart, though with some light rubbing and a few marks. Front hinge slightly strained. Internally, generally firmly bound although slightly strained in places. Ink inscription to front free-endpaper. Pages are mainly clean, with just the odd spot. Very Good Indeed, E H Wells, 3<

The "Ingoldsby legends" by the English cleric Barham (1788-1845), is a collection of poetry, legends, myths and ghost stories, which appeared first in a collected form in 3 series in 1840, 1842 and 1847. With this publication, Rackham developed his best style of fantasy writing. It would influence a generation of children and artists. The first edition illustrated by Rackham was published in 1898 (12mo).
