Dispatched to northern waters to protect Britain's Baltic interests, Horatio Hornblower must halt the advance of Napoleon's empire into Sweden and Russia. But first he must battle the terrible Baltic weather: fog, snow and icebound waterways; overcome Russian political and commercial intrigues; avoid the seductive charms of royalty as well as the deadly reach of assassins in the imperial palace; and contend with hostile armies and French privateers. With the fate of Europe balanced on a knife edge, the responsibility lies heavy on a Commodore's shoulders . . .This is the eighth of eleven books chronicling the adventures of C. S. "According to KGB archives, Pavel Sudoplatov directed the secretive Administration for Special Tasks. This department was responsible for kidnapping, assassination, sabotage, and guerrilla warfare during World War II; it also set up illegal networks in the United States and Western Europe, and, most crucially, carried out atomic espionage in the United States, great Britain, and Canada. Sudoplatov served the KGB for over fifty years, at one point controlling more than twenty thousand guerrillas, moles, and spies. But his involvement with the most nefarious Soviet activities - and the rulers who ordered them - made Sudoplatov an unwanted witness, and he was arrested in 1953 after Beria's fall. Despite torture and solitary confinement he refused to "confess," disavowing any criminal actions. He spent fifteen years in prison, then struggled two decades more for rehabilitation. Special Tasks is an astonishing memoir and a singular historical document of a man who knew and did too much for the Soviet empire." First Edition. Hardback. The Perreaus and Mrs. Rudd tells the remarkable story of a complex forgery uncovered in London in 1775. Like the trials of Martin Guerre and O. J. Simpson, the Perreau-Rudd case--filled with scandal, deceit, and mystery--preoccupied a public hungry for sensationalism. Peopled with such familiar figures as John Wilkes, King George III, Lord Mansfield, and James Boswell, this story reveals the deep anxieties of this period of English capitalism. The case acts as a prism that reveals the hopes, fears, and prejudices of that society. Above all, this episode presents a parable of the 1770s, when London was the center of European finance and national politics, of fashionable life and tell-all journalism, of empire achieved and empire lost. The crime, a hanging offense, came to light with the arrest of identical twin brothers, Robert and Daniel Perreau, after the former was detained trying to negotiate a forged bond. At their arraignment they both accused Daniel's mistress, Margaret Caroline Rudd, of being responsible for the crime. The brothers' trials coincided with the first reports of bloodshed in the American colonies at Lexington and Concord and successfully competed for space in the newspapers. From March until the following January, people could talk of little other than the fate of the Perreaus and the impending trial of Mrs. Rudd. The participants told wildly different tales and offered strikingly different portraits of themselves. The press was filled with letters from concerned or angry correspondents. The public, deeply divided over who was guilty, was troubled by evidence that suggested not only that fair might be foul, but that it might not be possible to decide which was which. While the decade of the 1770s has most frequently been studied in relation to imperial concerns and their impact upon the political institutions of the day, this book draws a different portrait of the period, making a cause clbre its point of entry. Exhaustively researched and brilliantly presented, it offers both a vivid panorama of London and a gauge for tracking the shifting social currents of the period. Daring All Things is a unique and extraordinary autobiography, which was published for the first time 55 years after its completion (shortly before The Rev George Kendall died suddenly in 1961, aged 79). The book is the life story of a man born into a working-class rural Yorkshire childhood in the late Victorian era, who through self-education, piety, ambition and sheer hard graft projected himself onto the then British Empire's biggest stages. Kendall chose the life of a primitive Methodist minister and, initiated through First World War duty, also pursued a dual career as a military chaplain, which lasted 30 years in war and peace. Using his Christian faith, humour and straight talking, Kendall became a confidante to British royalty, prime ministers and religious leaders throughout the first half of the 20th century. Using his initiative, bravery and patriotism, he became both participant and eyewitness at many of the epoch-making moments during the most intense period of the United Kingdom's and Ireland's histories: Two World Wars, the rise of women's rights, the rise of working people's rights, the rise of Sinn Féin, the creation of the NHS and the welfare state and the development of the modern police and prison systems were all within his compass. The Rev Kendall always ensured that a keen sense of morality - both public and private - was always to the fore. However, he was no staid clergyman; he delighted in life and its colourful characters. As one of the last of the great polymaths, Kendall was able to advise and educate both in private and public arenas. Speakers Corner, which he described as 'the greatest forum in the world', became his open-air pulpit - and he was its most well-loved speaker by the 1930s and through the Second World War, when he again served as a military chaplain in London. By the final years of his life, Kendall was the country's most war-experienced chaplain - having spent eight years on the front lines in four different countries and serving a further three years post-First World War with the first British Army on the Rhine. In 1920, he was given the responsibility of being in charge of the exhumation of the battlefields of Belgium and France, and building the war cemeteries we know today. His work there culminated in the highly secretive process to select the body that became 'The Unknown Warrior' - and he ensured his safe passage to England, to be buried at Westminster Abbey. George Kendall's life was shrouded in mystery - much of it unrecorded formally. Daring All Things finally reveals the enormity of his experience and provides new historical information that will lead to academic revision of many of the events he lived through. Ultimately, the purpose of the book is to explain in the clearest of terms The Rev Kendall's belief in divine providence in both his - and anyone's - life who believes in it; this has been understood as 'God's Hand' at work on Earth. If this most remarkable of accounts doesn't make you a believer, nothing will. In order to promote the primacy of Kendall's testimony, the modern-day equivalents of the individual national leaders he met and worked with provide forewords to each chapter. Each reflect on the man they encounter - and the cumulative effect is both a memorial and reassurance that hats might change, climates change and priorities change, but the underlying nature of the British establishment remains (if a little frayed) in modern times. Hope is, in deed, alive.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. New/Picture Boards. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall., Helion & Company, 2016, 6, Solihull: Helion & Company, 2016. In the first part of this book Professor Lods deals exhaustively with the historic features which were largely responsible for the development and transformation of Judaism. He discusses the characteristics of the great Asiatic empires of Assyria and Babylonia which brough about the downfall of the two Israelite kingdoms; and describes the appearance, in these two little states, of a line of prophets who, in open opposition to the narrow nationalistic religion of their contemporaries, evolved a purer and wider monotheistic ideal. The second part traces the development of Judaism as a new politico-religious growth based on a compromise between the old order and the new tenets of the prophets, and follows its destiny up to the time of the Maccabees. Sylvia Constance Ashton-Warner MBE (17 December 1908 28 April 1984) was a New Zealand writer, poet and educator. She spent many years teaching Maori children, using stimulating and often pioneering techniques which she wrote about in her 1963 treatise Teacher and in the various volumes of her autobiography. Her success derived from a commitment to "releasing the native imagery and using it for working material" and her belief that communication must produce a mutual response in order to effect a lasting change. As a novelist, she produced several works mostly centred on strong female characters. Her novel Spinster (1958) was made into the 1961 film Two Loves (also known as The Spinster) starring Shirley MacLaine. Once an outsider, against overwhelming odds he has become the darling of London Society and has begun the climb to success on the slippery steps of Victorian England. Now he is ready for the next move--an advantageous marriage. When he chooses, against the advice of family and friends, a woman of wealth twelve years older than himself, both his marriage and his career are threatened by the jealous reprisals of his influential former mistress." "Benjamin Disraeli, 1st Earl of Beaconsfield, KG, PC, FRS (21 December 1804 â 19 April 1881) was a British politician and writer who twice served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He played a central role in the creation of the modern Conservative Party, defining its policies and its broad outreach. Disraeli is remembered for his influential voice in world affairs, his political battles with the Liberal Party leader William Ewart Gladstone, and his one-nation conservatism or "Tory democracy". He made the Conservatives the party most identified with the glory and power of the British Empire. He is the only British Prime Minister of Jewish birth. Disraeli was born in Bloomsbury, then part of Middlesex. His father left Judaism after a dispute at his synagogue; young Benjamin became an Anglican at the age of 12. After several unsuccessful attempts, Disraeli entered the House of Commons in 1837. In 1846 the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Peel split the party over his proposal to repeal the Corn Laws, which involved ending the tariff on imported grain. Disraeli clashed with Peel in the Commons. Disraeli became a major figure in the party. When Lord Derby, the party leader, thrice formed governments in the 1850s and 1860s, Disraeli served as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Leader of the House of Commons. He also forged a bitter rivalry with Gladstone of the Liberal Party. Upon Derby's retirement in 1868, Disraeli became Prime Minister briefly before losing that year's election. He returned to opposition, before leading the party to a majority in the 1874 election. He maintained a close friendship with Queen Victoria, who in 1876 created him Earl of Beaconsfield. Disraeli's second term was dominated by the Eastern Questionâthe slow decay of the Ottoman Empire and the desire of other European powers, such as Russia, to gain at its expense. Disraeli arranged for the British to purchase a major interest in the Suez Canal Company (in Ottoman-controlled Egypt). In 1878, faced with Russian victories against the Ottomans, he worked at the Congress of Berlin to obtain peace in the Balkans at terms favourable to Britain and unfavourable to Russia, its longstanding enemy. This diplomatic victory over Russia established Disraeli as one of Europe's leading statesmen. World events thereafter moved against the Conservatives. Controversial wars in Afghanistan and South Africa undermined his public support. He angered British farmers by refusing to reinstitute the Corn Laws in response to poor harvests and cheap imported grain. With Gladstone conducting a massive speaking campaign, his Liberals bested Disraeli's Conservatives in the 1880 election. In his final months, Disraeli led the Conservatives in opposition. He had throughout his career written novels, beginning in 1826, and he published his last completed novel, Endymion, shortly before he died at the age of 76., Stein and Day, 1975, 3.5, London England: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1974. On 17 July 1971 King George V changed his name from the German-soundi8ng Saxe-Coburg in response to the intense anti-German feelings which marked public opnion during the war years. Thus the Windsors, the family name of the present Royal House, came into being. Theirs has been a chequered story, and is told here by Elizabeth Longfrod with insight, sympathy and with wit. The old Empire has virtually disappeared - and with it many of the Royal titles. Neverthe;ess, the Queen has proved herself a human link not only between the members of the modern Commonwealth, but also a force for unity between the peoples of each country. This 'unfinished story' concludes with an optimistic glance into the future. Sheldon Watts, applies his perspective to the study of global disease, exploring the connections between the movement of epidemics and the manifestations of imperial power in the Americas, Asia, Africa and in European homelands. He shows how the perceptions of whom a disease targeted changed over time and effected various political and medical responses. He argues that not only did western medicine fail to cure the diseases that its own expansion engendered, but that imperial medicine was in fact an agent and tool of empire. Watts examines the relationship between the pre-modern medical profession and such epidemic disasters as the plague in western Europe and the Middle East; leprosy in the medieval west and in the 19th-century tropical world; the spread of smallpox to the new world in the age of exploration; syphilis and nonsexual diseases in Europe's connection with Asia; cholera in India during British rule; and malaria in the Atlantic basin during the eras of slavery and social Darwinism. He investigates in detail the relation between violent environmental changes and disease, and between disease and society, both in the material sphere and in the minds and spirit of rulers and those who where ruled. This book is an account of the way diseases - arising through chance, through reckless environmental change engineered by man, or through a combination of each - were interpreted in western Europe and in the colonized world., Yale University Press, 1997, 3, London: Frank Cass, 1984. picorial wraps; 81 clean, unmarked pahes; includes: Jean Besson (Land Tenure in the Free Villages of Trelawny, Jamaica: Carribean Peasant Response to Emancipation); Gervase Clarence-Smith (Portuguese Contribution to the Cuban Slave and Coolie Trade 19th century); Lowell Gudmundson (Black Into White in 19th Century Spanish America: Afro0american Assimiliation in Argentina and Costa Rica); Paul Thomas (hanging Attitudes in Expanding Empire: The Anti-Slavery Movement 1760-1783. Ever since EDWARD VIII gave up his throne in 1936 to marry her,the extraordinary career of Wallis,Duchess of Windsor, has never ceased to fascinate. How was it that the most eligible bachelor in the world fell in love with this unknown American woman, who was not generally considered beautiful? What was the nature of their relationship? Was she responsible for the Abdication? What was she really like? The fatherless poor relation of two distinguished American families,Wallis Warfield grew up to be tough and self-reliant.Her unhappy first marriage to a sadistic naval officer was followed by an adventurous period during which she had many love affairs and visited China. It was during her second marriage,to the sentimental London businessman Ernest Simpson, that she met the Prince of Wales, who three years later fell passionately in love with her,and three years after that renounced an empire to be united with her. During their complicated life in exile, often in the glare of hostile publicity, she worked hard to give him an existence suitable for an ex-King,and to make him feel his sacrifice had been worthwhile. The years after his death were sad ones, and the protectiveness of her French lawyer,Maitre Suzanne Blum, only served to heighten curiosity about the Duchess's strange life. Many questions remain unanswered. Why did her birth go unrecorded? What were the qualities which so infatuated the Prince of Wales? Why did she never have children? Michael Bloch, who spent ten years as Maitre Blum's assistant and edited the Windsor's private correspondence (see rja31088 and rja31098 - an author SIGNED copy.) in two best selling volumes,is the ideal person to provide this biographical reassessment. In it he dispels much of the mystery that has surrounded her,and paints a vivid portrait of a courageous, glamorous and unusual individual - perhaps in some ways not a woman at all. An original and innovative examination of the continent and its culture that was the epicenter of the world for almost five centuries. European history is deeply embedded in the global civilization that has emerged in the 21st century. More than two thirds of today's nations were once European colonies or protectorates. Europe's legacy is evident in the trajectory of the United States and has influenced aspiring hegemonic powers like China. For centuries, Europe was the heart and soul of the West, and European powers enjoyed unprecedented global hegemony, not only by military and economic means, but also through their influence on politics and culture. The rise and fall of the European era of world supremacy constitutes one of the most epic histories of all time. There were the extraordinary changes of the Renaissance and its aftermath, which marked the beginning of Europe's imposition of itself over other civilizations, but it was Columbus's discovery of America that provided the key to its meteoric rise. Spain and Portugal would form the first global empires, closely followed by Holland, Britain, France and Russia. Following the exploits of navigators like Vasco da Gama and Captain Cook, the conquistador Hernan Cortes, missionary Henry Livingstone and others, Europa reveals the origins of Europe's rapid expansion, which was then expanded upon further by millions of Europeans migrants, who spread their culture and values. MacLennan also reveals how statesmen, scientists, inventors, philosophers, writers, and revolutionaries were responsible for transforming the continent into a civilization that inspired universal attraction. Even into the twentieth century, after reaching the nadir of imperial decline and self- destruction, Europe has once again become a global trendsetter., Pegasus Books, 2018, 5, UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/NFINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,crisp and clean, subject b/w photographic front +rear, illustrated dw/dj; with negligible shelf-wear to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Top+fore-edges bright and clean, contents bright, tight and near pristine.Bright, clean, publisher's original brown cloth bds with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and coloured, illustrated eps showing Simpson's letters.UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn,9- 239pp [paginated] includes preface,12 chapters, epilogue, profuse b/w, sepia and colour contemporary photographs+illustrations throughout the text and the book,a select biblio,an index, photographic acknowledgements at rear, plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,a dedication, and a contents list/table. MP3 CD. New. An 1892 tale of London's Jewish East End, Israel Zangwill groups the seemingly illogical and distinctly impolite devout customs of relocated eastern European Jews alongside the forces of integration. Israel Zangwill's awareness of Yiddishkeit and talent in stage show made a chain of memorable monographs that had a crucial impression on the public view of this far branded settling faction.

The publication of a one-volume edition gave the author the chance of showing appreciation to the public and the columnists for their kind-hearted response of this plot of an unknown land, and of returning the first sub-title, which is an answer to many censures on its creative style. The novel is proposed as a study, over emblematic characters, of a populace whose tenacity is the very astonishing piece of information in the annals of the earth, the belief and principles of which it has much widely sculpted. At the demand of countless book lovers, he had aversely supplied a glossary of Yiddish terms and sentences, from some given to the American edition by the other part. The author removed only those terms which appeared but once and are then discussed in the book, and to every statement he had given a suggestion of the linguistic from which it was gotten.

Israel Zangwill was an English writer at the forefront of cultural Zionism in the 19th century, he was a warm friend of Theodor Herzl. He then declined the seek out for a Jewish native country and was the lead thinker in arrears of the national movement.

Israel came from London in Jewish family of migrants from the Russian Empire. His father, Moses Zangwill, was from Latvia, and his mother, Ellen Hannah Marks Zangwill, was from Poland. He devoted his life to winning the distress of individuals he regarded as prejudiced, becoming occupied with matters including Jewish liberation, Jewish acclimatization, territorialism, Zionism, and the rights of women. His brother was author Louis Zangwill., IDB Productions, 2017-01-01, 6, London: HMSO, 1939. 63 pp., folding map, Paperback, minor library markings, overall very good. - If you are reading this, this item is actually (physically) in our stock and ready for shipment once ordered. In addition to his works on ethics, which address the individual, Aristotle addressed the city in his work titled Politics. Aristotle considered the city to be a natural community. Moreover, he considered the city to be prior in importance to the family which in turn is prior to the individual, "for the whole must of necessity be prior to the part".[111] He famously stated that "man is by nature a political animal" and argued that humanity's defining factor among others in the animal kingdom is its rationality.[112] Aristotle conceived of politics as being like an organism rather than like a machine, and as a collection of parts none of which can exist without the others. Aristotle's conception of the city is organic, and he is considered one of the first to conceive of the city in this manner.[113] The common modern understanding of a political community as a modern state is quite different from Aristotle's understanding. Although he was aware of the existence and potential of larger empires, the natural community according to Aristotle was the city (polis) which functions as a political "community" or "partnership" (koinÅnia). The aim of the city is not just to avoid injustice or for economic stability, but rather to allow at least some citizens the possibility to live a good life, and to perform beautiful acts: "The political partnership must be regarded, therefore, as being for the sake of noble actions, not for the sake of living together." This is distinguished from modern approaches, beginning with social contract theory, according to which individuals leave the state of nature because of "fear of violent death" or its "inconveniences."[L] Aristotle made substantial contributions to economic thought, especially to thought in the Middle Ages.[116] In Politics, Aristotle addresses the city, property, and trade. His response to criticisms of private property, in Lionel Robbins's view, anticipated later proponents of private property among philosophers and economists, as it related to the overall utility of social arrangements.[116] Aristotle believed that although communal arrangements may seem beneficial to society, and that although private property is often blamed for social strife, such evils in fact come from human nature. In Politics, Aristotle offers one of the earliest accounts of the origin of money.[116] Money came into use because people became dependent on one another, importing what they needed and exporting the surplus. For the sake of convenience, people then agreed to deal in something that is intrinsically useful and easily applicable, such as iron or silver.[117] Aristotle's discussions on retail and interest was a major influence on economic thought in the Middle Ages. He had a low opinion of retail, believing that contrary to using money to procure things one needs in managing the household, retail trade seeks to make a profit. It thus uses goods as a means to an end, rather than as an end unto itself. He believed that retail trade was in this way unnatural. Similarly, Aristotle considered making a profit through interest unnatural, as it makes a gain out of the money itself, and not from its use.[117] Aristotle gave a summary of the function of money that was perhaps remarkably precocious for his time. He wrote that because it is impossible to determine the value of every good through a count of the number of other goods it is worth, the necessity arises of a single universal standard of measurement. Money thus allows for the association of different goods and makes them "commensurable".[117] He goes on to state that money is also useful for future exchange, making it a sort of security. That is, "if we do not want a thing now, we shall be able to get it when we do want it".[117]--Wikipedia, Macmillan and Co, 1905, 4, New York Montreal London: Tankian Publishing Corp, 1975. [PU: G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York and London], ARMENIAN MASSACRE, TURKEY, ARMENIA, 1915, OTTOMAN GOVERNMENT, HERBERT ADAMS GIBBONS, RACE, TURKS, ASIA MINOR, GERMAN COMPLICITY, EMPIRE, CRÈME DE LA CRÈME,, Rare First Edition (SD). I found only two others for sale on the Internet. One selling for $225.00 and the other for $250.00. I've rated this book Very Good Minus, taking into account age. It is in generally very good condition, but does have a few cover issues as well as one page issue. You can see the black covers in the photos. The front cover has areas of color loss. The photo (1st) isn't quite picking this up. When it is visible you are looking at a sort of speckled pattern of color, a mixture of black and gray. That's not the case on the spine and rear cover. As you can see, the rear cover does have a spot of soiling and a few other spots of discoloration. The other cover issue is the loss of the gilt lettering on one of the words in the title on the front cover. The word 'Events' is pretty much gone. There also should be a little gilt tab between two lines of the title and only part of it is present. Also the 'T' in 'Blackest' has some loss. The yellow lettering on the spine is in pretty decent shape, quite legible. 'Putnam' at the bottom of the spine has lost some of its color, but is legible. The rest of the covers are in pretty good shape. There's no rubbing or wear at any of the edges. The corners are in excellent shape as well with just one tiny speck of rub-through at the front bottom one. That's actually quite remarkable. The page edges are toned but mostly quite clean. The book is pretty square (spine has only the slightest forward lean, nothing you would probably even notice). The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers (one of the more expensive books appeared to show some of its binding at the juncture, that is not the case here). Both covers are also nicely tight, although the rear cover makes a bit of a crinkling sound when you open and close it. Some of the white paper (just the surface paper, no holes) from the blank verso of the first front end paper, just adjacent to the juncture with the title page, got pulled off on to the title page just adjacent to the juncture, so you see some of the white paper on the title page there (see photo). That doesn't recur anywhere else in the book. The pages are very clean with just a very few small bits of soiling, nothing much of anything. The pages are, as you would expect, somewhat toned, though uniformly. There is a tiny tip of the bottom corner crease or semi-crease on a number of the early pages. I didn't see any significant creases. The page imperfection I referenced earlier is a small loss off the top edge of three consecutive pages. It goes down only 1/8th of an inch, no more, and goes across 3/16th" on the first page, 1/2" on the second page, and 3/8th" on the third page. Thus, it is very far from the print. There are no markings anywhere in the book. There are no attachments (NOT ex-library). There is a penciled name off the top edge of the blank first front end paper and there's a lightly penciled word just of the top edge of the copyright page. There's no other writing to be found anywhere in the book. From the Foreword: 'It is because the Armenian massacres in Turkey are clearly established, because responsibilities can be definitely fixed. that I feel it advisable and imperative at this moment to call attention to what is undoubtedly the blackest page in modern history, to set forth the facts, and to point out the responsibilities.' Ch. 1: 'In April 1915, the Ottoman government began to put into execution throughout Turkey a systematic and carefully-prepared plan to exterminate the Armenian race. In six months nearly a million Armenians have been killed.' Ch. 5: 'There is reason to believe the German government welcomed, if not encouraged, the disappearance of Armenians from Asia Minor, for the furtherance of German political and commercial designs on the Ottoman Empire.', Books<
