Last leaf of text followed by leaf blank on recto, bearing on verso Note by Binder (v. note); pp.viii+892+[ii]; publishers inserted 16pp. catalogue at end; light and darker streaked yellow-green rough buckram, blocked with publishers initials device, black, on back cover, ruled, blocked, and lettered black on front cover, ruled and lettered gilt on spine, in the publishers standard style for this author. Poor quality war-time gilt oxydised on spine, and cloth of spine very slightly dusty; minute blank corner chipped from title-page; otherwise a nice copy. Though best remembered to-day as a Pre-Raphaelite ceramic artist, friend of William Morris, and leading light in the Arts & Crafts movement, Morgans novels had a great vogue in the Edwardian period when he was seriously compared on both sides of the Atlantic to Thackeray, Dickens, and even George Eliot. The Note by Binder reads, somewhat improbably: The author seems not to have noticed the discrepancy in dates between the story of Moses Wardles fight with the sweep in this novel and the account of the same incident given in Joseph Vance... Another serious error is in assigning Bob Brettle to him as an opponent. Brettle was in his prime somewhere about the date of the story. Perhaps the author meant Tom Paddock. We could often correct errors of this sort if the books came to this shop in an earlier stage of development - a narrative device we have not before encountered!
