Ich lebe seit beinahe 5 Jahren in Neapel und habe viele Tage und Wochen in Pompeji zugebracht; den ganzen Sommer 1876 bewohnte ich ein Casino in der Nahe Pompeji 's. Der Umgang hat mich also mit dem Gegenstande vertraut gemacht und mein Studium der pompeji-literatur belebt. Alles und jedes in meiner Darstellung gründet sich demnach auf unmittelbare persönliche Anschauung und eigne Prüfung. Es wäre freilich für die Ausführung eines Werkes wie das vorliegende, von grösserem Werthe gewesen, wenn sich jemand gefunden hätte, der Künstler, Kunsthistoriker und Archäolog zugleich gewesen wäre und ebensoviel an Ort und Stelle hätte verkehren können; weil er sich aber nicht fand, so bin ich eingetreten und habe die Sache so gut gemacht, wie ich konnte.
