From The Why and Wherefore of this Book: One thing this book is not, and that is a history of the part played by the Royal Air Force in the Middle East and Greece; though, when one has seen history in the making, one may well be tempted to write it. But the inside story: of the early days of that great campaign -- and how great it was has yet to be generally realized -- cannot now be written. In the following pages will be found but part of the story -- a mere tithe -- of the work of the R. A. F. in the Middle East during those first difficult days. Nor is this book the history of one squadron. It is true that it deals mainly with the life and death of the members of one famous squadron, a squadron I came to know well -- and I shall always be proud that I flew with them on a few occasions. I have tried to make those men live again in these pages. It was a very great squadron, but there were others just as fine, just as hard-working, although, being prejudiced in its favour, I cannot agree that any was greater.
