"John Fremont's report of his second expedition is one of the single most important pieces of Western Americana. His exploration of the overland trails to Oregon and California was of great interest to an expanding nation.and the excitement soon generated by the Mexican-American War and the Gold Rush made it one of the most popular American books of the mid-19th century. In various editions (the fourth edition of Wagner-Camp describes over two dozen) this report was more widely read than any other account of the West at the time, and the text and map had a seminal effect on the routes frequented in the great period of emigration.
