Stratford-on-Avon : Shakespeare Head Press, 1926-1927. Leather. Near Fine. 7.5" by 5.5". Not Stated. A smart limited edition seven volume set of the works of Irish novelist, Laurence Sterne. Complete in seven volumes. Limited to five hundred and thirty copies, of which five hundred are for sale. Shakespeare Head edition. Written by Laurence Sterne, an Irish novelist and Anglican cleric who wrote novels, sermons and memoirs, and indulged in local politics. This set includes: The Life & Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, 1926. Complete in three volumes. Inspired by Don Quixote, the novel was originally published in nine volumes, and purports to be a biography of the eponymous character. Its style is marked by digression, double entendre, and graphic devices. A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy, 1927. In 1765, Sterne travelled through France and Italy as far south as Naples, and after returning, he decided to describe his travels from a sentimental point of view. The Sermons of Mr. Yorick, 1927. Sermons collected from the career of the author which outsold all of his other works and were the source of much of his fame. He published these collections under the pseudonym of Mr. Yorick. Letters, 1927. A collection of letters written by the author to various correspondents, including: Stephen Croft, Mrs. Ferguson, David Garrick, John Hall Stevenson, and Ignatius Sancho. Bound in half red calf with red cloth boards. Externally, very smart with light wear to the extremities and minor fading to the spine. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound.
