Head and tail of spine and spine edges slightly worn, upper hinge just starting to crack at top, slight offsetting from plates onto text, otherwise contents clean and bright. A very good copy. Roscoe J170(2). Collates exactly except that 6 pages of adverts at the end are not present. Prince Lee Boo was the Pelew Islander brought back to England by Captain Wilson, after the wreck of the 'Antelope' and who died in England in 1784 from smallpox. First published by E. In August 1783, his ship, the Antelope, ran aground and was wrecked on the Pelew Islands, which until that time had seen no European presence. Wilson and his crew escaped to the shore and were treated well by the natives. The crew then constructed a boat from the wreckage of their ship and in it succeeded in reaching Macao in China. They took with them Prince Lee Boo, one of the king's sons, whom Wilson subsequently brought to London. For a while the prince was lionized by society, but eventually he succumbed to smallpox and died. The East India Company then sent out two vessels, the Panther and the Endeavour under Captain John McCluer, to inform the king, Abba Thule, of the bad news and present him with gifts of seeds and plants." A trifle rubbed, spine sunned. Early inked ownership inscription of Miss Jenkinson of Pitchford Hall to FEP, very occasional light spotting. A choice copy of the John Harris edition of a popular account, intended for a juvenile readership, of Prince Lee Boo (1764-1784). The book, a greatly abridged version of George Keate's (1729-1797) Account of the Pelew Islands, from the Journals of Captain Henry Wilson and some of his officers, shipwrecked there in the Antelope in August 1783 (1788), was first published by E. Newbery in 1789. The narrative concerns British East India Company officer Captain Henry Wilson's (1740-1810) shipwreck on Palau and his subsequent encounter with the Palauan people, one of whom, the young prince Lee Boo, later accompanied Wilson to England. Lee Boo was one of the first Pacific Islanders to visit Britain, and his life and untimely death, only five months after his arrival in London, captured the imagination of the British, and wider European and American, audiences. The Guardian of Education (Vol. I p.299) praised the book, stating: 'we have of late seen some Juvenile Libraries, in which this interesting history found no place; and, in our opinion, the work is amongst those which ought not to be superceded [sic] by other of inferior merit.'
