Description: "Exhibition catalogue / monograph of the 19th Century French painter and photographer Gustave Le Gray. -- Gustave Le Gray's life was as romantic as any novel. A young painter in Rome, then a fashionable portrait photographer in Paris, Le Gray received commissions from Napoleon III, and astonished viewers with his painterly landscapes and ravishing seascapes. Facing bankruptcy, he fled Paris with Alexandre Dumas to Palermo, traveled to the Middle East, and finally settled in Egypt, where he became drawing master to the ruler's children and continued to make photographs until his death in 1884. Le Gray's work had remained largely unknown by the general public until he was rediscovered in the 1960s and was deemed by connoisseurs to be the Monet of photography. The fruit of years of research, this complete retrospective offers, as no volume before it, an assessment of Le Gray's important place in the history of photography.", 2002, Folio, pre-printed pages accomplished in manuscript. About 150 pages of manuscript entries. This is a journal of two Atlantic trading voyages kept by Captain Thomas E. Perry. It has a few interesting things going for it. In the first place, although these voyages were made during the Civil War, Capt. Perry does not seem to be at all concerned with, or threatened by, Rebel privateers. Secondly, as well as being a log of the ships' voyages, these journals are also a sort of personal diary for their keeper. There are fairly substantial entries in each port describing things Perry did and saw. After Mareilles, they put in a Alicata (Licata, Sicily),"just the most filthy and poverty looking place apparently I ever did see" on Christmas Day. He goes for a long walk and his opinion changes. "Everything looks very ancient - wonderfully so..." At a "Capuchin Convent" he is feted and fed by "Friers." He writes about his experiences there and in Palermo for four full pages. They return from Palermo to Licata and Perry fills another three pages. On the return to New York he reports sightings of many vessels, including the schooner Enchantress, (which had been captured by the Rebel privateer Jeff Davis, then recaptured by the Union in July 1861), but still appears not to be at all concerned about Confederate pirates. Back in New York, he lists fourteen ships that have just completed the voyage from the Mediterranean, and how long each passage took. He gives "the consignors, Mess. Chamberlain Phelps & Co. good satisfaction and on Monday April 14th, 1862 left the Forest King probably forever and with my wife started for home in the Steamer Empire State via Fall River - Got home on Tuesday at 11 am to find our daughter Susan E rather indisposed." After being home a mere two weeks, "I left home for Philad' to take charge of the brig Ellen Bernard of Baltimore to go to Key West - with coal at $4.50 pr. ton." He begins the journal of this voyage with a crew list, and proceeds in his usual chatty manner, with not a mention of the war, until after delivering their cargo of coal when "we were taken in tow by the US Steam Tug Boat Thos. Kearney and towed out over the reef and into the Gulf Stream - having been chartered by Government to carry 200 troops - and one horse - to Hilton Head for $1000." They accomplish their mission and return to Boston without incident, The ship is sold to a "Captain Reuben Collins who is to command her... with a full cargo of Ice for Hilton Head S.C. for 1900$ freight by charter party." The rest of the journal is taken up by later, shore side entries, such as what he planted in his garden in 1871, and by personal meditations, quotes from newspaper articles and other sources. At the very front of the journal is a full page of notes devoted to "An example for working Longitude. The imprint on the handsome title page reveals that the journal is published by E. & G. Blunt. In all, a fascinating journal that belies its apparently run-of-the-mill nature. Very good condition in worn half calf over marbled boards., VENETIIS: APUD JOANNEM BAPTISTAM SESSAM, 1591. In 4. She published eleven volumes of poetry, ranging in topic from verses on childhood and domestic topics, but also on political and patriotic themes. She spent her adulthood caring for her father Benjamin, a Revolutionary War veteran of the Battle of Lexington; a couple of the poems in this volume concern the Revolutionary War, e.g. "The Battle of Lexington," and " The Warriors's Return." She was also a contributor to Newburyport abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison's anti-slavery newspaper, The Liberator. (Garrison's birthplace was only a few blocks away from the Goulds'.) The snap of clipper ship sails and the sounds of hammering from shipyards along the Merrimack come alive in a few of Hannah Gould's poems in this volume: in particular "The Launch" and "The Last Shipwreck." Edward Monroe Bacon, in his 1902 book, Literary Pilgrimages in New England, gives a detailed exposition of the rich political and literary history of the Newburyport area, as does J.J. Currier in the standard work, Ould Newbury: Historical and Biographical Sketches (1896.) *** BENJAMIN PERLEY POORE, (who signed his name Ben: Perley Poore,) born in Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1820, was laterly a nationally-known journalist and political commentator of the mid nineteenth century. He founded and was the first president of the Grid Iron Club in Washington DC. as well as serving various quasi-political positions such as Clerk of the Senate Committee on Printing and Clerk of the Committee on Foreign Relations. In these roles he had the access to, and familiarity with, many of the notable political figures of the day: his two-volume Perley's Reminiscences of Sixty Years in the National Metropolis (1886) makes entertaining reading. John J. Currier (noted above) gives an more in-depth sketch of Poore's early years, in which one is struck the sheer variety of opportunity available to men of talent in this age. How indeed, one wonders, did a lad expelled from his prep school for bad behavior, go on such a variety of worthy endeavors: foreign attache at Brussels whilst simultaneously acting as foreign correspondent for a Boston newspaper; authorized by the Massachusetts legislature to bring home ten volumes-worth of documents from Paris pertaining to the conduct of the American Revolution; Major and Lieutenant Colonel of the Sixth Massachusetts Regiment during the Civil War. He also famously lost a bet about presidential candidate Millard Fillmore winning more votes in Massachusetts than his opponent, John Fremont. In payment of the wager he was required to push a wheelbarrow of apples from his home at Indian Hill Farm to Boston. An illustrated broadside with song entitled "The Wheelbarrow Polka" was published on the occasion. . Signed by author. Hard Cover. Good-., Wm. J. Edinburgh and London - William Blackwood and Sons and Thomas Cadell, 1839 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. A handsomely-bound set of the works of the poet, Felicia Hemans. Felicia Hemans' works appeared in nineteen individual books during her lifetime. After her death in 1835 they were republished widely, usually as collections of individual lyrics and not the longer, annotated works and integrated series that made up her books. For surviving women poets, like Britons Caroline Norton and Letitia Elizabeth Landon, Americans Lydia Sigourney and Frances Harper, the French Amable Tastu and German Annette von Droste-Hlshoff, and others, she was a valued model, or (for Elizabeth Barrett Browning) a troubling predecessor; and for male poets including Tennyson and Longfellow, an influence less acknowledged. Hemans' critical reputation has been re-examined in recent years. Her work has resumed a role in standard anthologies and in classrooms and seminars and literary studies, especially in the U. S. It is likely that further poems will be familiar to new readers, such as The Image in Lava, Evening Prayer at a Girls' School, I Dream of All Things Free, Night-Blowing Flowers, Properzia Rossi, A Spirit's Return, The Bride of the Greek Isle, The Wife of Asdrubal, The Widow of Crescentius, The Last Song of Sappho, and Corinne at the Capitol. With engraved frontispiece to the firstvolumes, and engraved title pages. Complete in seven volumes. Condition: In green calf bindings with gilt detailing. Externally, smart, with just some slight fading to the spine, and some rubbing. Internally, firmly bound. One hinge is slightly strained. Pages are bright and clean, with just some foxing to the first and last few pages, and some offsetting from the frontispieces. Kearney and towed out over the reef and into the Gulf Stream - having been chartered by Government to carry 200 troops - and one horse - to Hilton Head for $1000." She published eleven volumes of poetry, ranging in topic from verses on childhood and domestic topics, but also on political and patriotic themes.
