Wystan Hugh Auden (1907-1973) es conocido como el poeta más brillante de la generación británica de los treinta. Estudió en Oxford, vivió en Berlín entre 1928 y 1929, viajó por Islandia, China y España durante la década siguiente y abandonó Europa poco antes de iniciarse la segunda guerra mundial. Escribió libros de viajes, como "Letter from Iceland" y "Journey to a War"; poemas de tema político, como "Spain"; libros que amalgamaban prosa y verso, como "The Orators"; ensayos de crítica literaria, como "Secondary Worlds" y "The Hand of the Dyer"; libros de poemas breves, como "Another Time" y "Thank You, Fog"; composiciones extensas, como "The Age of Anxiety"; y piezas dramáticas y libretos para ópera, como "The Dog Beneath the Skin y The Ascent of FG".
