Four of the articles review various pharmacological topics, whereas the fifth is an autobiographical account of a scientific career. It is part of a series that originated in 1958.Purpose: The intent is to provide extensive reviews highlighting recent insights and discoveries in drug research and applications. Within the limited scope of the topics covered, these objectives are reasonably accomplished, although the reviews have a historical tendency to them, which makes the term "recent" somewhat relative.Audience: For most of the chapters, the target audience appears to be scientists working directly in the specific areas covered by that chapter. The authors are credible authorities in the areas that they cover. The final autobiographical chapter may be of more general interest.Features: The first four chapters cover a diverse range of topics from herbal preparations (kava-kava, garlic, ginger) to the use of yeast in drug discovery, and from an update on virus population dynamics to role of adrenal medullary hormones in streptozotocin-induced diabetes. The final chapter is an autobiographical account of the research career of Jay Glasel.Assessment: This volume will be of interest to scientists working directly in the areas covered, but of lesser usefulness to those outside of these specific areas. In this sense the book is much like a review journal, albeit somewhat more dated. In general the chapters are well written and well referenced, although there are very few references to the 2001 literature, except for the chapter on yeast. The diabetes chapter is particularly lacking as it has only five references to papers published in the past eight years. I found Glasel's account of his experiences as an undergraduate at CalTech of particular personal interest, because I was an undergraduate there a few years later.
