DJ/Good; sound w/closed tear to upper edge & loss to lower front. Case study of political dissent supression in 1960's USSR. In 1964 an important clandestine military-political organization surfaced in Leningrad. Its declared aim: to form an "underground liberation army" to "overthrow the [Soviet] dictatorship and destroy the defensive forces of the oligarchy." Self-named the All-Russian Social-Christian Union for the Liberation of the People, commonly known by its acronym, VSKhSON. The underground union had some 30 in membership before being uncovered the KGB in 1967 with another 30 "candidates" being prepared for initiation. By the time of its arrest, the organization's influence had reached into such disparate locations as Moscow, Tomsk, Siberia, and Siauliai, Lithuania. The regime unmasked the group in February 1967 and knew it to be the most significant military-political organization to appear in Soviet Russia since the death of Stalin. What made VSKhSON particularly disturbing and unwelcome was its "neo-Slavophile" orientation. For Soviet leaders few things were more fearful than political opposition based on Russian nationalism and resumption Russian Orthodox Church influence which would inevitably find broad-based popular support. A sober, well-researched examination of this remarkable organization of dissidents and the Soviet legal system that prosecuted them. 12 chapters, 3 appendices, 344 pages, with frontispiece of 5 revolutionaries. . Gd. - VG. 64pp. Soviet propaganda booklet publ. by "Soviet Russia,Today ", a propagnda publ. journal for the Soviets, in Dec. 1939 after beginning of Russia's invasion of Finland telling Stalinist lies excusing the invasion of Finland & excusing her Non-Aggression Pact w/ Germany. After signing Non-Aggression Pact w/ Germany, Russia engaged in Finnish War (also known as Winter War) by invading Finland. War lasted November 1939-March 1940. Soviets suffered heavy losses but eventually won, occupying part of Finland. Their unexpected heavy losses against the Finns is said to have encouraged Hitler to later doubt the Soviet military strength & to invade Russia & break the Russian-Nazi treaty. Russia used as an excuse for its invasion the use of Finnish territory years before to invade Soviet Union after Russian Revolution & the supposed renewed threat of an invasion to destroy the Socialist republic. This pamphlet traces & defends Soviet diplomatic history w/ Finland since World War I, its recent diplomatic & military moves against Finland, blames the Finns & excuses the invasion as preventing English & French threat to Russia using Finnish territory, discusses the Soviet-German Non-Aggression Pact as supposedly upsetting Intervention Plans of Great Britain & France, discusses Soviet relations w/ Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, all of which it would conquer. She paints, she draws, she gets crushes on boys. Until one night when Soviet officers barge into her home, tearing her family from the comfortable life theyÕve known. Separated from her father, forced onto a crowded and dirty train car, Lina, her mother, and her young brother slowly make their way north, crossing the Arctic Circle, to a work camp in the coldest reaches of Siberia. Here they are forced, under Stalin’s orders, to dig for beets and fight for their lives under the cruelest of conditions.Lina finds solace in her art, meticulously and at great risk documenting events by drawing, hoping these messages will make their way to her father’s prison camp to let him know they are still alive. It is a long and harrowing journey, spanning years and covering 6,500 miles, but it is through incredible strength, love, and hope that Lina ultimately survives. Her story begins in 1940, when Russian tanks rolled into Lithuania and brought her face to face with an armed conflict that would end forever the idyllic life young Frieda enjoyed with her family. Shortly after, the Russian 'liberators' were driven out by the Nazi 'liberators,' who were determined to annihilate the Jews. Written during the late 1940s but not published until now, [the book] is a suspenseful account of young Frieda's perilous escape from Lithuania: her life under two rapacious occupying armies, her role as a secret agent, her flight from a notorious Nazi prison camp, her survival on the front lines, her imprisonment under the Soviets, her romance with a Russian nobleman, and finally her daring journey through occupied Eastern Europe to reach safety and freedom." The story opens in August 1940, when the country has just been incorporated into the Soviet Union; it closes on midsummer's day 1941. During these months each individual has been obliged to take a stand. "From the Baltic Republics to the Black Sea to the barricades in Moscow, Russian Roulette takes players to the scenes of the critical military events that led to the vast changes underway in the Soviet Union. Six historical and hypothetical battles are presented in this Scenario Pack, including: Soviet Intervention in Baku: When ethnic strife between Armenians and Azerbaijanis went out of control in early 1990, Soviet troops were called in to bring order to Baku, Azerbaijan's capital. This Scenario is a night street battle between Soviets and a crowd of well-armed Demonstrators. Crackdown in Latvia: In January of 1991, the Soviets sent troops into seven different Republics in an attempt to end nationalist movements. In this Scenario, Soviet Special Forces fight Latvian police for control of the Interior Ministry building, in a battle that was televised internationally. Other Scenarios cover Black Berets in Lithuania, Vigilantes in Azerbaijan, and Ethnic Strife in Georgia. There is even a Scenario for what might have happened if the Soviet military had tried to kill Boris Yeltsin during August's failed Coup. Each Scenario includes a detailed Map, special rules, and full data for all the combatants. Also included is background material for each of the Scenarios, plus an overview of the Soviet military and security forces." ., Leading Edge Games, 1992, Bradt Travel Guides, Foreign Languages Publishing House, Moscow, 1960.. 199 pp, 8vo (8 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket.
