Shakespeare's sonnets are poems that William Shakespeare wrote on a variety of themes. When discussing or referring to Shakespeare's sonnets, it is almost always a reference to the 154 sonnets that were first published all together in a quarto in 1609; however there are six additional sonnets that Shakespeare wrote and included in the plays Romeo and Juliet, Henry V and Love's Labour's Lost. Shakespeare's sonnets are considered a continuation of the sonnet tradition that swept through the Renaissance, from Petrarch in 14th-century Italy and was finally introduced in 16th-century England by Thomas Wyatt. With few exceptions, Shakespeare's sonnets observe the stylistic form of the English sonnet - the rhyme scheme, the 14 lines, and the meter. But Shakespeare's sonnets introduce such significant departures of content that they seem to be rebelling against well-worn 200-year-old traditions. Instead of expressing worshipful love for an almost goddess-like yet unobtainable female love-object, as Petrarch, Dante, and Philip Sidney had done, Shakespeare introduces a young man. He also introduces the Dark Lady, who is no goddess. A collection of the Bard’s beautiful, and often surprising, poetry. In addition to his numerous dramatic and comedic masterpieces for the stage, William Shakespeare is also famed for his sonnets. These poems, usually consisting of fourteen lines in iambic pentameter, address not only traditional themes of romantic love but also darker subjects including lust, hatred, and infidelity, and featuring a risqué series referring to the poet’s mysterious “Dark Lady.” While the sonnet existed long before Shakespeare’s time, he, as usual, put his own mark of genius on the form.</ Digital Content>E-books>Fiction>Fiction>Fiction, Xist Publishing Digital >16<

From fairest creatures we desire increase,That thereby beauty's rose might never die,But as the riper should by time decease,His tender heir might bear his memory:But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,Feed'st thy light's flame with self-substantial fuel,Making a famine where abundance lies,Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.Thou that art now the world's fresh ornamentAnd only herald to the gaudy spring,Within thine own bud buriest ty contentAnd, tender churl, mak'st waste in niggarding.Pity the world, or else this glutton be,To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee. Shakespeare’s sonnets cannot be overestimated; this is the best sort of poetry. How clean, voiced imagery. In general, in what language you do not read – the pleasure is provided. Idealization of the beloved, ode to his beauty, magnification by his Perfection. But what is interesting – the author sees the imperfections of a loved one, but literally forgives them. And nothing can darken the object of affection for him. Digital Content>E-books>Fiction>Fiction>Fiction, Xist Publishing Digital >16<
