We have found in the extra-canonical books, to which we have referred, sufficient evidence that at their date the Psalter was part of the Canon, or, at all events, that a collection known by the name of David was of practically canonical standing. The next witnesses to be examined are the canonical books other than the Psalms. And the evidence for which we may look will be of either of two kinds--viz., general, asserting or implying the existence of a collection of psalms; or particular, containing actual quotations from the Psalms. Evidence of the former kind, being less technical and less susceptible of double application, deserves the first consideration. Let us begin with the books of Chronicles. These books are usually dated about the commencement of the Greek domination in Asia--i.e., B.c. 330,1 and thus take us 130 years farther back than the extra-canonical witnesses have brought us. Their date is determined mainly by certain genealogical lists (1 Chron. iii. 1-24). In these tables the genealogies of the Davidic and high-priestly families are, we may assume, brought down to the author's own date at the very latest. They thus furnish a point of time before which the composition is altogether impossible (unless, indeed, we suppose them to be the work of a later interpolator), but after which the composition is extremely improbable, as the author would, for completeness, give the names of the living representatives of the two lines. He reckons in all six royal generations after Zerubbabel,1 and five generations of high priests, which would cover a period of from 150 to 200 years.
