First and foremost, the earlier volume dealt with a more or less alien society and culture as far as the North American reader is concerned, and consequently the attention to factual material within the basic frame work of interpretation was necessarily much greater than in the present chronicle, which deals with an historical development whose broad out lines are more or less familiar to the reader.
