Si quelques peintres n'ont eu d'autre merite, que celui de suivre pas a pas les traces de leurs maitres, et de les imiter en tout point, il en est d'autres, au contraire, qui, tout en admirant leur maitre, ont cherche a s'affranchir de sa ma-niere, et sont en quelque sorte devenus eux-memeschefs d'ecole.

Tel est Jacques Robusti, ne a Venise en 1512, et plus connu sous le nom de Tiotoret, parce que son pere exercait le metier de teinturier. D'abord eleve de Titien, le talent qu'il developpa excita bientot la jalousie de son, maitre qui cut la faiblesse del'exclure de son atelier. Cette disgrace, loin de le decourager, sembla en quelque sorte l'engager a re-doubler d'ardeur, et la chambre quil habitait fut bientot decoree de ses premiers essais. II avait trace sur la muraille cette inscription qui lui servit de regie: Le dessin de Michel-Jnge et le coloris de Titien. En effet, le jour il copiait les peintures du dernier, et la nuit il dessinait d'apres les pla-tres moules sur les statues du sculpteur florentin.

On doit encore dire que, pour bien connaitrele clair-obscur, Tintoret ayait l'habitude de dessiner a la lampe, obtenant, par ce moyen, des effets yigoureux.
