The long continued ill-health of his immediate predecessor in office left a large amount of work unfinished and had caused some confusion in the regular routine of the business. Then, too, the early records of the office were not available for practical use since they had never been indexed. The task was a large one, but Mr. Platt not only performed the daily tasks of his office, but he gave up long hours outside the regular working day, as well as a substantial sum from his own savings to the work of making available for practical use the large mass of old records and files which had accumulated since the foundation of the office, by making a complete and accurate index of all these old papers and memoranda. And altogether his uniform courtesy and efficiency in his official position won and held the respect of all who came in contact with him. United States Government Inspectors who from time to time have had occasion to examine into the minute details of the affairs of this office during Mr. Platts incumbency, have repeatedly certified to his high efficiency. This is but a briefglimpse at Frederick S. Platt, the lawyer and public servant. But after all, successful as he was in his chosen profession and in public office, those who knew him well, love to remember him as a plain spoken, unassuming, loyal friend. This does not mean, his keen, discerning judgment did not quickly detect the difference between the true and false in those who would court his favor.
