Not illustrated. 1908 Excerpt: . . . wicket quoins; sheeting of upper lock gates, which had been injured by ice; running boards and hand rails on gates and snubbing posts on guide cribs; rebuilt shed over compressed-air plant at abutment, destroyed by ice during the February freshet; grouted stone paving of both guide cribs; put new roof on blacksmith shop and patternhouse and repaired and painted those buildings; placed wooden covers over new valve-operating gearing and boxed lock-gate hinges; set one new snubbing post on upper guide crib and three on river wall of lock; repaired and replaced three wickets, horses, and props on Chanoine dam; and twice removed sedimentary deposits from above upper and below lower gates. An investigation disclosed that considerable scour had taken place above bear-trap foundations, extending to a depth of 12 to 14 feet below level of pass sill, or practically to bottom of concrete foundation. Approximately 300 cubic yards of small stone, with a covering of 575 cubic yards of large stone, were deposited in the depression. During September and October, 1907, a part of the force was engaged for a short time in constructing an automatic water gauge at the Point Bridge, Pittsburg, for the United States Weather Bureau. 0 Emergency. The following table shows the dates on which dam was raised and lowered during the year: Lock and Dam 2. --The dam at this lock is not yet completed, but the status of the work is such that all traffic must pass through the lock which has been operated during the year by a regular operating and care force.
