Clinical Child Psychiatry - new book

ISBN: 9781119967705

ID: 123832647

Making a psychiatric diagnosis in children can be challenging: someclinicians say the incidence of some childhood disorders, such asbipolar disorder and ADHD, is over-diagnosed while others sayingthey are undiagnosed, undertreated, and are a large burden onsociety. The drug treatment of child psychiatric disorderscan also be controversial in children and adolescents. This bookfulfills the need for an objective, clinically relevant source todispel this confusion. Clinical Child Psychiatry is a textbook of currentclinical practice in child and adolescent psychiatry. It isdesigned as a reference for clinicians that is both easily usableand authoritative, a ´´chairside´´ reference for theconsultation room. This book addresses a defined series of clinical entities thatrepresent the bulk of current treatment modalities and disordersencountered in 21st century practice. It isauthoritative in the areas addressed while at the same time beingrapidly accessible in format. To facilitate access, it presentsdisorders in declining order of frequency. The authors believe thatworthwhile clinical work must be informed by both evidence-basedpractice and by psychiatry´s traditional attention tointernal and interpersonal dynamics. They are committed to anapproach that is broadly biopsychosocial while based on currentclinical evidence for a pragmatic, clinical focus. The bookis divided into four sections. The first, Fundamentals of Child andAdolescent Psychiatric Practice, addresses assessment, treatmentmodalities, and planning. Common Child and Adolescent PsychiatricDisorders and Developmental Disorders cover the diagnosis andtreatment of the large majority of disease entities encountered inpractice. The final section, Special Problems in Child andAdolescent Psychiatry, includes a variety of topics such as fostercare and adoption, loss and grief, and forensics. The book alsoincludes: * New evidence relating to the areas of depression, psychosis, trauma. * New insights from genetics, genomics, and proteomics cleverlyintegrated into chapters on the individual disease with focus ontheir clinical application. * New chapter on consultation and collaboration within systems ofcare The book addresses a need for clinicians, many of whom arebeginners, non-psychiatrists, or psychiatrists entering unfamiliarterritory, to come up to speed rapidly in providing more thanperfunctory service to needy populations. This challenge grows evergreater. The book has a companion websitewith questions to facilitate learning.
