Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4) issued in original publisher's cloth maroon with gilt lettering to spine and cover. First edition. The Dumbarton Oaks Symposium on the Aztec Templo Mayor, co-chaired by Eduardo Matos and George Kubler 8 and 9 October 1983, marks the first time Pre-Columbian Studies at Dumbarton Oaks has held a conference on a single site. Yet the Templo Mayor is at the very center of Aztec studies, and it was felt it provided a special opportunity to draw together Aztec specialist from different nations and scholastic disciplines in a collaborative effort. A further departure from tradition was the organization of an exhibition of Aztec art (held at the National Gallery of Art) to complement and coincide with the symposium. Symposium meetings and exhibitions are alike in being essentially transitory-the scholars and object come together for only a short time and then disperse once again to their host institutions or homes, but the remembered impression of great works of art seen together, as in the Aztec show, can have an immeasurable impact and duration, just as a volume of symposium papers endures as a statement of knowledge at that time. The Aztec show was seen by 400,000 visitors; slightly more than 200 scholars attended the Templo Mayor symposium, but it was hoped this resultant volume would be read, critically review, cited and built upon by others, without respect to time. The papers in this volume seem to fall into five thematic categories: background, the offerings of the Templo Mayor, ritual and cosmos, ritual and rule, and summary and critique. Within the first theme, background, the lead article by Elizabeth Hill Boone Research, Mayorpage 5 thru 69 with 41 figures and bibliography, is a summary of research on the Templo Mayor from the Conquest to the most recent excavations in 1978; Miguel Leon-Portilla The Ethnohistoircal Record for the Huey Teocalli of Tenochtitlan page 71 thru 96 with 12 figures is a summary of the ethnohistorical record for the building phases of the structure; and Augusto Molina MontesTemplor Mayor Architecutre: So What's New? pages 97 thru 108 with bibliography discusses the architecture of the temple and it related structures in the context of Aztec and Mesoamerican architecture in general. The rich offerings found in the recent Templo Mayor excavations are the point of focus for the next four papers: Doris Heyden Symbolism of Ceramics from the Templo Mayor with 21 figures and bibliography presents an iconographic interpretation of two major classes of ceramic offerings; Juan Alberto Roman Berrelleza Offering 48 of the Templo Mayor: A Case of Child Sacrifice with 8 figures and bibliography describes the massive child sacrifice of Offering 48; Carlos Javier Gonzalez Gonzalez Mescala Style Anthropomorphic Artifacts in the Templo Mayor with 8 figures and bibliography analyzes the ubiquitous Mezcala style figures and masks; and Frances F Berdan The Economics of Aztec Luxury Trade and tribute with six maps helps to place all the "foreign" offerings in the broader context of Aztec trade and tribute. The next six papers confront the symbolism associated with the Temple Mayor, but there is a clear between the papers by the Mexican Scholar Eduardo Mates Montezuma Symbolism of Temple Mayorpage 185 thru 120 with 8 figures and bibliography; Johanna Broad The Provenience of the Offerings: Tribute and Cosmo vision pages 211 thru 256 with 34 figures and bibliography and Alfredo Lopez Austin The Masked God of Fire pages 257 thru 292 with 10 figures and bibliography which focus on ritual and Cosmo vision-the philosophical structure of the titular precinct and the objects within it-and the papers by the US scholars Richard TownsendCoronation at Tenochtitlan The Ideology of Autosacrifice at the Templo Mayor pages 293 thru 370 with 34 figures and bibliography; and Emily Umberger Events Commemorated by Date Plaques at the Templo Mayor: Further Thoughts on the Solar Metaphor pages 411 thru 40 with 13 figures and bibliography) which treat ritual as it explains and manifests various aspects of rulership. Emily Umberger's paper was not delivered at the symposium meeting, but it is included in the volume because it makes an important contribution to the controversy surrounding the date-stones and the different building phases of the Templo Mayor (also discussed by Leon-Portilla, Towsned and Nicholson). The final three essays are summaries and critiques of the previous articles, written by the three symposium panelists-Ester Pasztory Texts, Archaeology, Art and History in the Templo Mayor: Reflections pages 451 thru 462; H B Nicholson , Symposium on the Aztec Templo Mayor: Discussion pages 463 thru 484; and George Kubler Summary Perspective pages 485 thru 496. Pasztory's and Kubler's essays look at the preceding papers from broad, and different, perspective, while Nicholson gives a critique of some papers and offers more evidence on the dating of the building phases. His essay and the responses of the various authors whose papers he critiqued, remind us that Aztec research still has room for sharply differing interpretations.Condition:Corners gently bumped a near fine copy issued without dust jacket., Dumbarton Oaks, 1987, Shenzhen , P.R China: World Architecture Review Agency, 1985. Hays Town, deceased, was an architect of the old school, practical and forthright, yet with a warm personal style. From the book reviews on Amazon..." No student of architecture should be without a study of, even on a limited basis, the style of A. Hays Town. Mr. Town wanted the original drawings to convey to the viewer his sense of style.. The drawings and photographs are presented in the casual, uncalculated, genteel manner with which almost EVERYTHING is done in the Delta and Louisiana. You'd never come away from his houses and think "Looks like the decorator JUST LEFT!" Nothing is contrived or 'studied' too closely. It all appears as if the whole flavor and spirit of the Hays house just grew/developed over the years even if the house still smells of fresh paint." May require extra shipping to outside U. S. [SR: 2666175], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780961578008], Amdulaine Publications, Amdulaine Publications, Book, [PU: Amdulaine Publications], Amdulaine Publications, A First Printing of 5000 The dust jacked inner flaps state: "A. Hays Town has designed more than 1000 buildings including schools, churches, commercial buildings, courthouses, banks, offices and residences during his career.... ...during the thirties, Town was appointed director of the American Historical Building Survey for the state of Mississippi. He commented that the measuring and recording of the historical buildings aided him greatly in his future application of design. Moving back to Louisiana in 1939, after receiving national and international fame for his work., Town started his own architectural firm in Baton Rouge. He continued to have a varied practice encompassing mostly commercial and public buildings.Eventually he designed a home for a friend and liked it so well that he began to concentrate on residential design, which seemed 'a more satisfactory outlet' for his talents. Town has received many honors and rewards during his career, including the Natchez Preservation Award.....and the Arthur Ross Award from the National Academy of Design in New York.... His works have been published in Life, The New Yorker, Southern Living, Southern Accents, and most major architectural magazines in America and Europe. This book, which represents volume one, is a collection of 106 preliminary sketches of some of the buildings designed by Mr. Town since the '60. On the page opposite the sketch, the name of the person who commissioned the house will be listed along with the location and date designed." "Book Design by A.
