The first is to provide information essential to the reader who wants an overview of classical mythology. The second is to convey some of the flavor of the myths as stories. Hence some chapters tell stories while othesr simply present information. Many sections are followed by a series of remarks in smaller type. These remarks are intended to provide additional information or insights. Many of the illustrations are paintings on ancient pottery. On the earlier vases, the figures are in black on the natural red background of the clay. This is called black figure painting. Later, artists painted the background black and left the figures the natural red of the clay. This is called red figure painting.
