THIS IS TOMORROW - First edition

WILSON, ADRIAN HEATH, LAWRENCE ALLOWAY, GEOFFREY HOLROYD, TONI DEL RENZIO,, np (132pp), profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Edward Wright. A decade before it became ground zero for the Swingin' sixties, London was still shrouded in industrial smoke and rebuilding from the carnage of the Blitz. Its art schools and architectural colleges were however already working towards a colorful, less class-stratified post-war Britain filled with modernist architecture, art, and design for the consumer-driven masses. This generation of forward thinkers loosely known as "The Independent Group" gave birth to the ground-breaking 1956 "This Is Tomorrow" exhibition held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. Presciently combining corporate sponsors with twelve "teams" of younger architects, designers, and theorists, the exhibition presented a dozen distinct collaborative environments that were clear forerunners of both Pop and Installation Art. The complete list of participants of the "This is Tomorrow" exhibition and its graphically innovative catalogue were Theo Crosby, Germano Facetti, William Turnbull, Edward Wright, Richard Hamilton, John McHale, John Voelcker, J. D. H. Catleugh, James Hull, Leslie Thornton, Anthony Jackson, Sarah Jackson, Emilio Scanavino, John Ernest, Anthony Hill, Denis Williams, Eduardo Paolozzi, Alison and Peter Smithson, Nigel Henderson, Victor Pasmore, Erno Goldfinger, Helen Phillips, James Stirling, Michael Pine, Richard Matthews, Kenneth Martin, Mary Martin and John Weeks, Robert Adams, Frank Newby, Peter Carter, Colin St. John Wilson, Adrian Heath, John Weeks, Lawrence Alloway, Geoffrey Holroyd, Toni del Renzio. A brand new, pristine example of the 2010 Whitechapel Art Gallery facsimile reprint of this vital document featuring new introductions by Iwona Blazwick and Nayia Yiakoumaki still in the publisher's shrinkwrap.

This is Tomorrow - Paperback

2010

ISBN: 0854881867

ID: 18154652791

[EAN: 9780854881864], Neubuch, [PU: Whitechapel Gallery], BRAND NEW, This is Tomorrow, Nayia Yiakoumaki, Iwona Blazwick, "This Is Tomorrow" was a seminal exhibition of art, architecture, music and graphic design that took place at London's Whitechapel Gallery in August 1956. At its core was a room given over to the Independent Group, the proto-Pop collective comprised of (at various stages) the theorists Reyner Banham and Lawrence Alloway, photographer Nigel Henderson and the artists Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton, William Turnbull and John McHale. The Independent Group's room premiered works of Op art alongside film posters, collages, murals, films and a jukebox, and was Britain's introduction to the phenomenon later named Pop. The spiralbound catalogue for "This Is Tomorrow" was designed by Edward Wright and published by Lund Humphries; out of print since 1957, it has since become a much sought-after rarity and a classic of graphic design and postwar visual culture. This facsimile edition is published for the Whitechapel's 2010-11 reconstruction of the 1956 show.
