Of course not everyone wants a pedigree that is a mixture of legend, wishful thinking and nonsense. Every family, however modest, has a history and this history can be traced in English records for at least several centuries. The Morris family, ancestors of Lord Nuffield, the motor manufacturer and philanthropist, worked on the land like most Englishmen for generations. Yet this humble family has a proven pedigree with unbroken descent for four hundred years. In drawing up a family tree or pedigree, you aim to trace back generation after generation in order to learn who your ancestors were, where they lived, how they earned a living, what wealth or social position they attained and what contribution they made to the growth of their community. Genealogical work is certainly interesting, a lifetime's hobby in some cases.
