Title: Dal Giglio al David : Arte civica a Firenze fra medioevo e rinascimento Author: Donato, Maria Monica ; Daniela Parenti Price: $79.95 ISBN: 9788809784994 Description: Firenze: Giunti, 2013. 32cm., pbk., 351pp. illus., most in color. Italian text. Exhibition held at Galleria dell'Accademia, Firenze. Summary: Adopting a totally new approach to a fascinating topic, Civic Art in Florence from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance focuses on works of art originally commissioned to decorate the public buildings of Florence which housed the magistracies tasked with running the city, the halls of the various Arti, or guilds, and the city gates and walls. The exhibition covers a wide range of themes including civic heraldry, religion and the city, such representative public buildings as the Palazzo dei Priori, the Palazzo del Podestà and the church of Orsanmichele, and the political parties that lorded it over the city (the House of Anjou, the Arti, the Guelfs and the Ghibellines), illustrating the subjects they chose and explaining why they chose them. This approach offers visitors a new key to understanding the works of art themselves, by underscoring the importance of images in the propaganda and communication strategy of the groups which ruled the city in the era of the Commune and the Republic, before the rise of the Medici family changed the city for good from both a political and an aesthetic standpoint. The exhibits bear witness to a complex figurative vocabulary rich in allegory, where the dividing line between the sacred and the secular is often hard to detect. For instance, in the Palazzo dei Priori, known today as Palazzo Vecchio, one was just as likely to encounter depictions of the Wheel of Fortune and of the mythological hero Hercules (on the city's official seal) as one was of St. Christopher or of the biblical King David, whose statue by Michelangelo (now in the Galleria dell'Accademia) brings the exhibition to an ideal close. Religious subjects have withstood the ravages of time rather better than secular images, as we can see from the numerous depictions of the Madonna in Majesty, of patron saints, and of such New Testament stories as the Incredulity of St. Thomas, a reflection on the administration of justice and the ascertainment of the truth (Giovanni Toscani, Galleria dell'Accademia; detached fresco in the Palazzo dei Vicari, Scarperia). A selection of rare Renaissance drawings and a fresco showing the Expulsion of the Duke of Athens (from the former Stinche prison, but now in Palazzo Vecchio) illustrate the so-called Pittura Infamante, or Defamatory Painting - a genre we might equate today with character assassination - which consisted in commissioning murals in public places to depict, often in gruesome detail, either events or individuals viewed with hostility by the city of Florence. Images boding well, on the other hand, were set up in the market place, Donatello's statue of Abundance famously perching atop a column in the Mercato Vecchio. While the original has now been lost, we are familiar with the statue from numerous copies produced over the centuries. Also, the decoration of the city gates and the heraldry adorning the city walls provided the city fathers with another opportunity to celebrate Florence and its allies. The exhibition devotes special attention to the Arti, the driving force behind the economic boom which Florence enjoyed in the era of the Commune and the true political power in the city at the time. Membership of one of the guilds was a precondition for playing an active role in the city's political life, and indeed Palazzo Vecchio was built for the Priori delle Arti, or guildmasters. For the first time in two centuries, visitors will be able to admire in a single venue the entire collection of panels depicting the guilds' patron saints. Overall, a compelling autobiography relating to life in the Mormon church. ., A. D. Worthington and Company., 1875., London: Darton, Longman & Todd, 1963 G-576. Kleine Markierung auf dem Titelblatt.// Historians are agreed that without exact elucidation of the fundamental problems of the early East-European past, it is impossible to comprehend the whole later development of Russia. Prolonged research has uncovered much that was hidden and has produced an abundant literature on the subject, to which the author's previous book (his first in English) 'The Origin of Russia' was a notable contribution. The most strenuous debate, however, centres on two controversial questions connected with early Russian history: the ethnic character of the original Russians, and the specific features of Russian Christianity from the tenth and eleventh centuries onwards. The essence of the problem lies in the correct interpretation of some Old-Slavonic words used by the Russian chroniclers, which evidently correspond to Greek terms. The author's analysis of the Greek texts - especially of the monuments of the Eastern Church canon law - in which these words appear, leads to the conclusion that the meaning of many Old-Slavonic words has been misinterpreted by the protagonists of the Slavonic origin of the Russians. After thus disposing of the main argument supporting the pro-Slavonic thesis, the author re-examines the entire source material concerning the ethnic character of the original Russians, which is shown unanimously to confirm their Scandinavian descent. He then goes on to discuss the very close links between Kiev and Constantinople from the tenth and eleventh centuries onwards and the deep influence of the Greek clergy on the religious, cultural and political life of Russia. After showing how the concept of the 'Byzantine nation', in which religious factors played a decisive part, became a model for the 'Russian nation', he traces the formation of the three nations (as they are now known), the Russians, the Ukrainians and the White Ruthenians, and analyses the abundant twelfth-eighteenth century source material illuminating the ethnic relations of Eastern Europe at that time. The conclusion finally drawn will help readers to shape their own view of the national character of presentday Russia. //509 Seiten mit 2 Karten. Sprache/Language: englisch/english. These originally adorned the pillars of Orsanmichele, a church resulting from the gradual transformation of the old ......................, Giunti, 2013, Longmans, Green, and Co, London, 1915. Inscribed by Author. author's inscription inside front cover reads: "Edwin Molesworth with the kind regards of the author, August 1st 1915" Written by his youngest son Sir Guilford Lindsey Molesworth with a foreword by the granddaughter of Dr. Molesworth. For sixteen years he was curate of Millbrook, Hampshire, and while there wrote, at the instigation of Dr. Rennell, dean of Winchester, a reply to Davison's Inquiry into the Origin and Intent of Primitive Sacrifice' (1826), a work which procured him the friendship of Dr. Howley, then bishop of London, afterwards archbishop of Canterbury. Howley presented him in succession to the livings of Wirksworth, Derbyshire (1828), and St. Martin's, Canterbury (1829); appointed him one of the 'six preachers' at Canterbury; and in 1839 presented him to the vicarage of Minster-in-Thanet, and a few months later (3 March 1840) to Rochdale. The last preferment he held for thirty-eight years. At Canterbury, during the stormy period of the Reform Bill, his talents, which were allied with a combative temperament, found abundant occupation, and both by voice and pen he became recognised as the leader of the church party in the diocese. But he was no less a zealous parish priest, and to him is due the first venture in cheap church periodical literature. The 'Penny Sunday Reader' which he edited and very largely wrote for five years, is said to have enjoyed an extraordinary popularity among the working men of many large towns. At Rochdale Molesworth had an ample field for all his activities. He succeeded an Erastian and absentee vicar, and found church life and work in the town at the last gasp. Dissenters at this time were agitating for abolition of church rates, and in Rochdale they had a doughty leader in the quaker John Bright, who fleshed his virgin sword in this controversy. Each party started a magazine, in which their case was defended and their opponents ridiculed. Molesworth fought in behalf of the rates, with a vigour and determination which, according to Bright (Speeches, ii. 517), was not 'surpassed in any other parish in the kingdom,' but his cause was a lost one, and defeat for his party inevitable. The Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture (CCSS) responds to the desire of Catholics to study the Bible in depth and in a way that integrates Scripture with Catholic doctrine, worship, and daily life. The series will include seventeen volumes, offering readable, informative commentary on each book of the New Testament. The CCSS implements the theological principles taught by Vatican II for interpreting Scripture 'in accord with the same Spirit by which it was written'--that is, interpreting Scripture in its canonical context and in the light of Catholic tradition and the analogy of faith (Dei Verbum 12). The CCSS is packed with features designed to help readers use the Bible more effectively in teaching, preaching, evangelization, and other forms of ministry. Each volume provides exegesis as well as reflection and application sections. A set of cross-references links each passage to the Catechism, the Lectionary, and related biblical texts. Sidebars present information on the background of the text and on how the text has been interpreted by the Church. Abundant quotations from saints and Church Fathers enable readers to glimpse the continuity of Catholic tradition. Each volume includes a Glossary, a list of Suggested Resources, an Index of Pastoral Topics, and an Index of Sidebars.
