'Professor Toynbee's method is to single out a particular species (...) to give the main literary evidence about their frequency and use in the ancient world, and to illustrate them from a wide range of monumental evidence. (...) The artistic evidence is admirably used to elucidate the ancient texts. (...) She has resolutely confined herself to the animals themselves and has eschewed almost all discussion of hunting, games, cavalry-technique, and other derivative subjects. As a result the book is a coherent and almost definitive account which enables us to repeople the animal kingdom of ancient Rome. (...) This fine book is rounded off by a fascinating appendix by R.E.
