Berkeley DB - new book

ISBN: 9780735710641

ID: a01aa378df4f40249777fb3c6f73c419

Berkeley DB The official Berkeley DB documentation from the creators, Sleepycat Software! The official information. Written by the well-known creators and maintainers of the Berkeley DB, Sleepycat Software. Reviewed by well-respected community members, Paul DuBois, author of MySQL, and David Beazley, author of Python Essential Reference. As embedded systems technologies continue to grow this book fills a need and shows how to add the database component to already complex systems. With front-end support from C++, Java, tcl, Perl, and Python--just about any experienced Web developer or programmer can use the Berkeley DB in their application, giving this book a wide audience base. The current Berkeley DB documentation, available only online, is outdated. Sleepycat has decided to partner with New Riders to both update their documentation and make it available in print form. More than a rehash of the documentation, the book will be split into two parts. The first section is a tutorial on using the Berkeley DB. It covers methods, architecture, data applications, memory, client-server, configuring the APIs in Perl, Java, and Tcl, how to use the BDB with Sendmail, debugging issues, etc. The second part of the book is a reference section of the various Berkeley DB APIs. Only the second part of the book will be available online via the Sleepycat web site. Part One will be available only in our book, Berkeley DB. Founded in 1996, Sleepycat Software, Inc. develops, distributes, and supports the Berkeley DB embedded database. This privately held company is well known for being the first to create and currently the oldest to distribute the most popular open source embedded database in existence. The founder of Sleepycat Software, Keith Bostik, Sleepycat founder, is a co-author on The Design and Implementation of the 4.4 BSD System, Addison Wesley, April 1996, ISBN 0-201-54979-4. Small, special-purpose computing devices and high-end core Internet servers need fast, reliable database management. Berkeley DB is an embedded database that provides high-performance, scalable, transaction-protected and recoverable data management services to applications. Extremely portable, this library runs under almost all UNIX and Windows variants, as well as a number of embedded, real-time operating systems. "Berkeley DB" is the ultimate resource for the world's most widely deployed embedded database engine. This book will aid software architects and engineers, product managers, and systems and network administrators without the overhead imposed by other database products. Designed by programmers for programmers, this classic library style toolkit provides a broad base of functionality to application writers. This book will help you to make intelligent choices about when and how to use Berkeley DB to meet your needs. You can visit the Sleepycat website to get the latest errata for this book.
