Walter Benjamin: Selected Writings, Volume 2: 1927-1934 - hardcover

ISBN: 0674945867

[SR: 121793], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780674945869], Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, Book, [PU: Belknap Press of Harvard University Press], Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, In the frenzied final years of the Weimar Republic, amid economic collapse and mourning political catastrophe, Walter Benjamin emerged as the most original practicing literary critic and public intellectual in the German-speaking world. Volume 2 of Selected Writings, covering the years 1927 to 1934, displays the full spectrum of Benjamin's achievements at this pivotal stage in his career. Previously concerned chiefly with literary theory, Benjamin during these Years does pioneering work in new areas, from the stud of popular Culture (a discipline he virtually created) to theories of the media and the visual arts. His writings on the theory of modernity-most of them new to readers of English--develop ideas as important to an understanding of the twentieth century as an contained in his widely anthologiied essay "The Work of Art in the Age of Technological Reproducibility. This volume brings together previously untranslated writings on major figures such as Brecht, Valéry and Gide, and on subjects ranging from film, radio, and the novel to memory, kitsch, and the theory of language. We find the manifoldly inquisitive Benjamin musing on the new modes of perception opened tip by techniques of photographic enlargement and cinematic montage, on the life and work of & Goethe at Weimar, on the fascination of old toys and the mysteries of food, and on the allegorical significance of Mickey Mouse. , A leading German critic from the generation of Europeans scarred by the First World War, Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) had a writing career marked by deep philosophical insights and tumultuous emotional crises. But until recently, most of his work was unavailable in English; the handful of essays that could be read in English, like "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction," were undisputed classics, but the full spectrum of Benjamin's thought remained untapped. That has changed with Harvard University's publication of the multivolume Selected Writings. This second volume covers Benjamin's work from 1927 to 1934, the period in which he established himself as a leading public intellectual, and encompasses a wide variety of literary forms addressing an even wider variety of subject matter. From interviews with André Gide to film reviews of work by Chaplin and Eisenstein, from the autobiographical recollections of "A Berlin Chronicle" to his reflections on the cultural nostalgia for children's literature and toys, Benjamin wrote with perception and unflagging inquisitiveness. The editors have provided a chronological essay, which helps place the assembled writings in the context of Benjamin's life; the collection considered as a whole will undoubtedly be of vital importance to any scholar of modern European philosophy., 10207, Criticism & Theory, 10204, History & Criticism, 17, Literature & Fiction, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 10159370011, German, 271602011, European, 10159358011, Regional & Cultural, 10204, History & Criticism, 17, Literature & Fiction, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 10412, German, 271600011, European, 10311, World Literature, 17, Literature & Fiction, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 21, Reference, 11444, Almanacs & Yearbooks, 11448, Atlases & Maps, 2572, Careers, 11626, Catalogs & Directories, 11472, Consumer Guides, 11475, Dictionaries & Thesauruses, 11713, Encyclopedias & Subject Guides, 11823, English as a Second Language, 11761, Etiquette, 11773, Foreign Language Study & Reference, 11880, Genealogy, 11902, Quotations, 8975382011, Survival & Emergency Preparedness, 5267710011, Test Preparation, 11970, Words, Language & Grammar, 5267707011, Writing, Research & Publishing Guides, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11057, Modern, 11019, Philosophy, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 4556, Popular Culture, 11232, Social Sciences, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 491404, Literary Theory, 468236, Literature, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 684276011, European, 684272011, World Literature, 468236, Literature, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491428, History & Surveys, 468232, Philosophy, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 468214, Social Sciences, 491448, Anthropology, 491450, Archaeology, 491452, Criminology, 491460, Gay & Lesbian Studies, 491458, Gender Studies, 491454, Geography, 684299011, Military Sciences, 491464, Political Science, 491490, Psychology, 491478, Sociology, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 684283011, Reference, 684284011, Atlases, 684285011, Bibliographies & Indexes, 684286011, Dictionaries, 684287011, Encyclopedias, 684288011, Writing Skills, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books

WALTER BENJAMIN: SELECTED WRITINGS: VOLUME 2: 1927-1934 - hardcover

1999, ISBN: 9780674945869

ID: 904119824

Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1999. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1999. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 880 pages. Volume Two of the author's collected essays. One of the greatest literary collections of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only and as part of Harvard University's Complete Works of Walter Benjamin. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Walter Benjamin's "Selected Writings: Volume 2: 1913-1926" in a felicitous English translation. The second volume of the Series, a landmark publication in the history of modern thought and literary criticism. The body of work shows Benjamin at the peak of his intellectual powers and rather poignantly, at the top of his professional life. The sheer joy of exploring, discovering, and mastering new areas of thought (that remain central to contemporary approaches and concerns) is evident in every piece, the radiant optimism that comes with emergent greatness not yet extinguished by his own melancholy temperament and tragic world events. "In the frenzied final years of the Weimar Republic, amid economic collapse and political catastrophe, Walter Benjamin emerged as the most original literary critic and public intellectual in the German-speaking world. Displays the full spectrum of Benjamin's achievements at the pivotal stage in his career. Previously concerned with literary theory, Benjamin does pioneering work in new areas, from the study of popular culture (a discipline he virtually created) to theories of the media and the visual arts. Brings together previously untranslated writings on major figures such as Brecht, Valery, and Gide, and on subjects ranging from film, radio, and the novel to memory, kitsch, and the theory of language. Muses on the new modes of perception opened up by techniques of photographic enlargement and cinematic montage, on the life and work of Goethe at Weimar, on the fascination of old toys, the mysteries of food, and the allegorical significance of Mickey Mouse" (Publisher's blurb). Walter Benjamin's personal heroism wasn't just some egotistical idea he had about himself. He lived and then died as a hero: He committed suicide on September 26, 1940 at the French-Spanish border while trying to escape the Nazis with a group of fellow Jews. They were all arrested by the Spanish police (Franco was one of Hitler's closest allies). Instead of being sent back to Germany to face certain death, Benjamin shot himself (he was 38 years old). Moved and humbled by his desperate yet principled stand, the Spanish police, defying Franco's orders, allowed his fellow Jews to escape. An absolute "must-have" title for Walter Benjamin collectors. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the First American Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: ALL other copies available online are subsequent printings or have serious flaws. A rare copy thus. The greatest literary/cultural critic of the 20th century.
