Durrell, Lawrence.:

Monsieur or The Prince of Darkness. - hardcover

1974, ISBN: 0571106609

ID: 11398891795

[EAN: 9780571106608], [SC: 10.03], [PU: Faber and Faber,, London,], BEAUTIFUL DUSTJACKET, Fiction|Literary, First Edition. London, Faber and Faber, 1974. 20.5cm x 13.5cm. 296 pages. Original Hardcover with original, unclipped dustjacket. In protective Mylar. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. Endpaper with name of preowner. In this novel Durrell has turned his attention to Avignon, which here replaces Alexandria as France now replaces Egypt. Nevertheless Egypt is still present and provides a background to this tale concerning the sin of the Templars- a background concerning the gnostic heresies which are still alive today in the Middle East, and which in the book deeply influence the lives of the characters who inhabit a dilapidated chateau quite near Avignon, having decided to lock themselves away from the world. The book is a modern and not a historical novel, but the characters are caught up with mysterious doings of a gnostic suicide club with its headquarters in Egypt, a club with world-wide affiliations and with a centre in the oasis of Macabru near Aledxandria. The characters in this new novel are as various and fascinating as ever- the brother and sister Piers and Sylvie: Bruce the doctor: Sutcliffe the novelist: his wife Pia. But it is more than a novel of ideas composed in a dramatic and highly coloured style; it is also a novel of shifting time-schemes with intriguing departures from the strict chronology of the usual novel technique. Egypt, France, Venice, here provide a background for the action which offers an original interpretation of the so-called sin of the Templars which has baffled scholars for so long. Avignon and the old chateau form the pivot to another typical Durrell novel- of 'sliding panels'. After 'Tunc' and 'Nunquam' it is a return to the style and treatment of 'The Alexandria Quartet', glinting with insights about love and death and full of strongly drawn characters who set one dreaming. Sprache: English Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. Endpaper with name of preowner. Original Hardcover with original, unclipped dustjacket. In protective Mylar.

POUND, Ezra:
Sonnets and Ballate of Guido Cavalcanti Sonnets and Ballate of Guido Cavalcanti. With translations of them and an introduction by Ezra Pound. - First edition

1912, ISBN: 0571106609

ID: 8929836126

[EAN: 9780571106608], [PU: London: Stephen Swift and Co., Ltd. 1912], Fiction|Literary, 8vo. pp.vii, [i], 135, [i]. 32pp. undated advertisements. Original grey streaked cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in gilt, pages uncut. Top edge of upper cover slightly bumped. Fine This edition, the bulk of which was destroyed by fire at the binders, varies slightly in the text from the far less scarce American edition that preceded it. The dedication reads "As much of this book as is mine I send to my friends Violet and Ford Madox Hueffer". Pound's translations of Cavalcanti were also a lesson in pushing his own craft forward, and in his own words "to embody in the whole of my English some trace of that power which implies the man". Pound's ten-page introduction to the book comprises an exposition of his deeply personal views on the art of translation. Each poem is in Italian with Pound's rendition facing the originals.
