Crystal, David:

The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language - Paperback

1987, ISBN: 9780521264389

Hardcover, ID: 592805811

Summer Institute of Linguistics, Academic Publications. Paperback. New. Paperback. 407 pages. Dimensions: 8.9in. x 5.9in. x 0.9in.David Foris gathered the data for this volume during the sixteen years he lived in the northwest part of Oaxaca in Mexico. He settled in the Chinantla, a Mexican term meaning an enclosed place , a region boxed in by high mountain ridges and difficult to reach. Foris makes available the knowledge he has acquired about the fascinating Sochiapan Chinantec language. It is an isolated language that exhibits a complex system of verbal inflection. Speakers of the language can use more than thirty tone-stress distinctions to communicate messages in whistle speech with minimal ambiguity. The majority of words consist of a single syllable; there are a small number of two-syllable words and less than a dozen known tri-syllabics. This model-neutral presentation describes everything from the phonemes up through phrases and clauses to compound sentences; from the changes of tone and stress to changes in nucleus to signal a wide variety of tense, aspect, and related features. Regarding this book, Dr. Rudolph C. Troike, Head of the Department of English at the University of Arizona, says, This is overall a masterful piece of work which makes a major contribution to Chinantec studies and to language typological research in general. Any list can only begin to convey the enormous diversity, complexity, and intrinsic fascination of the human faculty of language which is celebrated in The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language. Carefully developed to present an exceptionally wide range of information in a lively, readable and visually exciting way, it provides the general reader with a succinct, thematic account of language variety, history, structure, and behaviour. Above all it responds to the everyday questions that arise when, for example, teachers face multilingual classrooms, parents listen to their children beginning to talk or read, or professionals consider the practical applications of linguistic research. At the same time the encyclopedia reflects a deeper level of interest, arising out of the researcher's attempt to find patterns and principles in what we observe: the neurolinguist's study of the brain's functions; the speech scientist's investigation of speech and hearing mechanisms; or the linguist's comparative study of the languages of the world, whether spoken by hundreds or by millions. David Crystal's departure from conventional alphabetical principles has meant that the major Parts of the encyclopedia are organized in the most logical and natural way and the text written throughout in his easy and accessible style. Nevertheless, the Glossary (of over 1000 terms), the Table of the world's languages, and the substantial indexes included in the Appendices, as well as meticulous cross-referencing throughout the work, ensure that this will be an authoritative source of reference for all readers with an interest in language, languages, and language-related matters. This is a heavy book and will require additional postage outside the UK, Cambridge Univ Pr, 1987

The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language - used book

ISBN: 9780521264389

ID: 1735905

Developed to present a broad range of information in a lively, visually exciting way, The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language gives a straight, narrative account of language variety, history, structure, and behavior. Where did language come from? How many languages are there? Are some languages better than others? How do we learn our first language, or a second language? The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language is carefully designed to answer these and other questions about language--clearly and succinctly. David Crystal, a renowned linguist, discusses such controversial topics as prescriptivism, spelling reform, machine translation and computer language, Esperanto, child language learning, and foreign language teaching, with an inspired balance of scholarship and wit. This celebration of language is made lively by over 350 illustrations and 30 maps, creating a work that will appeal to a wide audience: teachers, parents listening to their children beginning to talk or read, students, linguists, and language lovers. Organized by theme rather than alphabetically, Crystal's crisp text flows easily, punctuated by anecdotes and human interest details. Unique features include a glossary of over 1,000 terms, a table of the world's languages (including creoles and pidgins), meticulous cross referencing, and substantial indexes that make this an engaging and authoritative source for all readers.
