London England: The British Musem Press. Very Good. 2005. 1st Paperback Printing. Decorative. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 0714150436 Paperback Paperback. The Queen of the Night..British Museum Objects in Focus This large Old Babylonian plaque, found in southern Iraq, was made between 1800 and 1750 BC. It is made of baked straw-tempered clay, modelled in high relief, and probably stood in a shrine. The figure could be an aspect of the goddess Ishtar, Mesopotamian goddess of sexual love and war; or Ishtar's sister and rival, the goddess Ereshkigal who ruled over the Underworld; or the demoness Lilitu, known in the Bible as Lilith. This book explores the symbolism and history behind this beautiful relief. The figure wears the horned headdress characteristic of a Mesopotamian deity and holds a rod and ring of justice, symbols of her divinity. Her long multi-coloured wings hang downwards, indicating that she is a goddess of the Underworld. Her legs end in the talons of a bird of prey, similar to those of the two owis that flank her. The background was originally painted black, suggesting that she was associated with the night. She stands on the backs of two lions, and a scale pattern indicates mountains. The relief may have come to England as early as 1924, and was brought to the British Museum in 1933 for scientific testing. It has been known since 1936 as the Burney Relief, after its owner at that time. The relief was in private hands until its acquisition by the Museum in 2003. 47pp.(We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.) ., The British Musem Press, 2005, Dover Publications. Paperback. New. Paperback. 292 pages. Dimensions: 8.1in. x 5.2in. x 0.7in.Rediscovered in modern times, these non-canonical gospels, epistles, and other pieces were excised from the standard Bible by various church councils in the first four centuries of the Christian era. Here, among other texts, are writings describing the girlhood and betrothal of Mary and her life before Christs birth; the childhood of Jesus, as described by Peter and Nicodemus; and the appearance of Christ before the gates of Hell, from whence he leads Adam and the saints to Paradise. Translated from the original languages, with 32 illustrations from ancient paintings and missals, The Lost Books of the Bible, helps give depth to the historical characters of Jesus, Mary, the apostles, and other figures of the New Testament. Presented without argument or commentary, these apocryphal texts are fascinating, often provocative, reading. An essential resource for the study of biblical history and theology, this authentic presentation of the lost Scriptures can be enjoyed for its beauty and directness, while also adding to ones understanding of life in Judea during the first century A.
