While the names of the experience change, the essence of the condition remains. Boundaries of Exile, Conditions of Hope presents the fiction, poems and essays of Albert Russo and Martin Tucker in its treatment of the substantial, though more elusive, feelings of inner exile. It deals with the forced exits and observable impacts of physical exile on the writers who have endured such experiences, but it concentrates on the conditions of inner exile. Such conditions stem, of course, from outerphysical politicalsocial causes, but the psychic condition of loss and the awareness of, and triumph over, loss is what matters in the content and context of this book. Exile once experienced is not a transient affair but a constant vessel in the stream of the heart. Identity after exile is never the same as identity prior to its arrival. About the Authors: Albert Russo, who has published worldwide over 65 books of poetry, fiction and photography, in English and in French, his two mother-tongues, is the recipient of many awards, such as The American Society of Writers Fiction Award, The British Diversity Short Story Award, several New York Poetry Forum Awards, Amelia Prose and Poetry awards and the Prix Colette, among others. His work has been translated into a dozen languages, including German, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Turkish, Bengali and Polish, and broadcast by the World Service of the BBC, publishing on the five continents, in 22 countries. He has also garnered several prizes for his photography books, Indie Excellence awards, among others. Hes been a member of the jury of the Prix Europen for over 25 years (sitting on the panel with Ionesco until his death) and sat in 1996 on the panel of the prestigious Neustadt Prize for Literature, which often leads to the Nobel Prize Martin Tucker is the editor of Confrontation, the prize-winning and internationally distributed literary journal, and Professor Emeritus of Long Island University. Dr. Tuckers reviews, essays, poems and stories have been widely published, including appearances in The New York Times Book Review, Publishers Weekly, The Nation, and The New Republic. He is also the recipient of two fellowships for distinguished achievement from the National Endowment for the Arts and Coordinating Council of Literary Magazines. During his tenure, Confrontation has won the OHenry Prize Story, Pushcart Prize, and has recognized in the Best American Short Stories. He is the author of several literary studies and the editor of more than 20 volumes of literary encyclopedia, including Moultons Library of Literary Criticism and the highly regarded The Literary Exile in the Twentieth Century as well as three collections of his poetry. From the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition: " Edward Weston, 1886-1958, American photographer, b. Highland Park, Ill. Weston began to make photographs in Chicago parks in 1902, and his works were first exhibited in 1903 at the Art Institute of Chicago. Three years later he moved to California and opened a portrait studio in a Los Angeles suburb. The Western landscape soon became his principal subject matter. In the 1930s, Weston and several other photographers, including Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, and Willard van Dyke, formed the f/64 group, which greatly influenced the aesthetics of American photography (see photography, still). In 1937, Weston received the first Guggenheim Fellowship awarded to a photographer, which freed him from earning a living as a portraitist. The works for which he is famous-sharp, stark, brilliantly printed images of sand dunes, nudes, vegetables, rock formations, trees, cacti, shells, water, and human faces are among the finest of 20th-century photographs; their influence on modern art remains inestimable. Weston made his last photographs at his beloved Point Lobos, Calif. , during the decade from 1938 to 1948, the year he was stricken with Parkinson's disease. His second son, Brett Weston, 1911-93, and his fourth son, Cole Weston, 1919-2003, were both photographers in their father's tradition. This new survey provides a complete history of American art and architecture from its seventeenth-century colonial beginnings to the latest installation and video work. Structured chronologically, the book defines the characteristics of the different periods and highlights the consistent forms, techniques, and styles that mark the art and architecture as distinctively American. Michael J. Lewis charts the ways in which American artists and architects both adopted and diverged from earlier European models to create an original visual language of their own. He also shows how that language in turn came to influence and eventually dominate art and architecture around the world. Professor Lewis integrates discussions of both buildings and works of visual art, revealing the shared social and aesthetic concerns that underlie the two. Vernacular, religious, secular, and corporate architecture appears alongside paintings, sculpture, photography, and new-media art. All the major American artists and works from the seventeenth century to today are included, such as epic history paintings by Benjamin West and John Singleton Copley; sublime landscapes by Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, and Frederick Church; society portraits by John Singer Sargent; groundbreaking abstract expressionist and pop art by Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, and Andy Warhol; and challenging sculptural, installation, and video works from more recent years by Robert Gober, Fred Wilson, and Matthew Barney. In architecture, dozens of different building types are illustrated and discussed, from the earliest colonial houses and churches to the most spectacular modernist and postmodernist houses, stations, museums, and iconic skyscrapers. 275 illustrations, 175 in color This item ships from multiple locations.
