Building Capitalism: Historical Change and the Labour Process in the Production of the Built Environment - hardcover

ISBN: 0415015529

Hardcover, [EAN: 9780415015523], Routledge, Routledge, Book, [PU: Routledge], Routledge, "Building Capitalism" represents an exploration of the nature of urbanization and capitalism. Linda Clarke argues that urbanization is a product of human labour engaged in building as well as a concentration of the labour force; that the quality of the labour process determines the development of production, and that, consequently, changes to the built environment reflect changes in the production process and, in particular, the development of wage labour. In support of these arguments, the author identifies a stage of capitalist building production involving a significant expansion of wage labour, and hence capital, and the transition from artisan to industrial production. The building activity which produced the first metropolis illustrates how the emerging capitalist mode of production finally replaced the remnants of feudal social relations. Linda Clarke draws from a wide range of original material relating to the development of London from the mid-18th to the early 19th century to provide a description of the development process: materials extraction, road-building, house-building, paving, cleansing and more., 2624, Industries, 52071011, Agriculture, 10020695011, Automotive, 886498, Computers & Technology, 10020700011, Energy & Mining, 3568199011, Fashion & Textile, 10020696011, Financial Services, 2636, Hospitality, Travel & Tourism, 16233431, Industrial Relations, 10020697011, Manufacturing, 10020698011, Media & Communications, 10020699011, Museums, 271615011, Performing Arts, 3568201011, Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology, 3568202011, Restaurant & Food, 2656, Retailing, 16233451, Service, 16233461, Sports & Entertainment, 271576011, Transportation, 3, Business & Money, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 9, History, 4762, Africa, 4808, Americas, 16252761, Arctic & Antarctica, 4884, Asia, 4921, Australia & Oceania, 4935, Europe, 4995, Middle East, 5032, Russia, 4853, United States, 5035, World, 4873, Ancient Civilizations, 5011, Military, 4987, Historical Study & Educational Resources, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11272, Human Geography, 11232, Social Sciences, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 468220, Business & Finance, 491564, Accounting, 684243011, Banking, 491578, Business Communication, 684244011, Business Development, 491580, Business Ethics, 491506, Business Law, 491584, Economics, 684245011, Entrepreneurship, 491594, Finance, 491602, Human Resources, 684246011, International Business, 684247011, Investments & Securities, 684248011, Management, 491624, Marketing, 684249011, Real Estate, 684250011, Sales, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491454, Geography, 468214, Social Sciences, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books
