W.W. Norton, 2014. Hardbound. New Book. Hardbound. A narrative biography of Louis Armstrong from a musical and social perspective, this book is intended for general readers with an interest in music. It covers Armstrong's years from leaving New Orleans for Chicago in 1922 through the middle 1930's. The author identifies these as Armstrong's musical peak years. The book focuses on connections among Armstrong's music, his life, and the social realities of race. It belongs to the Southern racial school of black or white. While it does not consider how race codes that created Creole, Latin, Native American, and Jewish races affected the development of Armstrong's jazz communities, it gives attention to shadism and the African American ?talented tenth? tradition in the North. The author works hard to dispel myths that Armstrong was a na?ve musician. He identifies Armstrong as revolutionizing American music in two separate waves, as an improvisational innovator for black audiences in the 20s, and as an innovative song stylist for white audiences in the 30s. He defines the central characteristic of Armstrong's musical style as fixed-and-flexible, the author's term for variations around one fixed rhythm, which he identifies as a West African tradition and contrasts with analysis of jazz as polyrhythmic. Culturally, he extols Armstrong as a brilliant exponent of a black vernacular forged in slavery and independent of written traditions, and associates intellectual musicians like Fletcher Henderson and Duke Ellington with self-denying Eurocentric perspectives. While the book contains analysis of Armstrong's music, much is designed for general readers who may be unaware that genius requires great intelligence and conscious effort, regardless of the skin tone of the individual, their social situation, personality, or field of work. The definitive account of Louis Armstrong?his life and legacy?during the most creative period of his career. Nearly 100 years after bursting onto Chicago's music scene under the tutelage of Joe "King" Oliver, Louis Armstrong is recognized as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. A trumpet virtuoso, seductive crooner, and consummate entertainer, Armstrong laid the foundation for the future of jazz with his stylistic innovations, but his story would be incomplete without examining how he struggled in a society seething with brutally racist ideologies, laws, and practices. Thomas Brothers picks up where he left off with the acclaimed Louis Armstrong's New Orleans, following the story of the great jazz musician into his most creatively fertile years in the 1920s and early 1930s, when Armstrong created not one but two modern musical styles. Brothers wields his own tremendous skill in making the connections between history and music accessible to everyone as Armstrong shucks and jives across the page. Through Brothers's expert ears and eyes we meet an Armstrong whose quickness and sureness, so evident in his performances, served him well in his encounters with racism while his music soared across the airwaves into homes all over America.Louis Armstrong, Master of Modernism blends cultural history, musical scholarship, and personal accounts from Armstrong's contemporaries to reveal his enduring cont arts and literature, arts music and photography, biographical, biographies, biographies and history, biography and history, composers and musicians, ethnic and national, home and garden, jazz Music, W.
