Doing Collective Biography - hardcover

ISBN: 9780335220458

[ED: Hardcover], [PU: OPEN UNIV PR], This book introduces the reader to Collective Biography, an innovative research methodology for use in Education and the Social Sciences. Each chapter gives a detailed example of Collective Biography in practice, showing how a group of students/scholars can work collaboratively to investigate aspects of the production of subjectivity. The book demonstrates how poststructuralist theory can be elaborated and refracted through the experiences of ordinary everyday life. The methodology of Collective Biography overcomes the theory/ praxis divide, putting theory to use in everyday life, and using everyday life to understand and to extend theory. It shows how everyday life can bring theory 'to life'. The methodology is of interest in both undergraduate and postgraduate research contexts across a range of disciplinary sites. Doing Collective Biography provides guidelines for developing a collective biography project and it demonstrates how these guidelines emerged from and were shaped by projects on such topics as subjectivity/subjectification, power, agency, reflexivity, literacy, gender, and neoliberalism at work. Collective biography is taken up here as a pedagogical practice that begins to disturb the technologies of power that construct hierarchies between teachers and students in universities. Practices of collaborative research and collaborative writing trouble these hierarchies while they are themselves, in turn, troubled by the ongoing reflexive analysis of the authors and their co-researchers and co-writers. The approach delineated in this book also foregrounds the importance of place and of habits of living that can be taken up as productive of an enabling pedagogy for research. The projects detail the structures and practices of the intensive site-specific bi-annual workshops that were held by the first author on an island in the tropical north of Australia. The collective biography workshops described here brought researchers from Australia together with researchers from Sweden, Germany, Denmark and Norway. It brought sociologists, psychologists, midwives and educators into dialogue around the question of how we might put the philosophical concepts developed by poststructuralist theorists to work in understanding the specificity of lived, embodied experience.251 p. - 236.2 x 160 mmVersandfertig in über 4 Wochen, [SC: 0.00], Neuware, gewerbliches Angebot
