The Jewish community of Poland was the source of a great part of the American Jewish community, but we have been told little of its fate in the 1920s and 1930s, after emigration to the United States ceased and when fierce anti~Semitism rose in Poland. This is an important and enlightening book, a contribution at the same time to Jewish history, Jewish sociology, and minority studies." ~Nathan Glazer. / Today there is no Jewish community in Poland, although Jews were, before the Holocaust, more numerous in Poland than in Germany or any other European nation. This significant study pictures the Jews of Poland on the eve of their destruction, in the period between the two world wars. It addresses the grand issues that touched most of Poland's Jews at the time and outlines the Polish pattern of anti~Jewish prejudice, discrimination, and violence. During the interwar period the very presence of the Jews, who after centuries in Poland were still considered intruders, was made a political issue by extreme Polish nationalists. Success of the nationalists was tied to Poland's deep economic and political problems and to the inadequacies of the governing elite. Some of the ugliest manifestations of organized Polish anti~Semitism, under the loudly proclaimed slogan "beat up a Jew," took place at the universities. After depicting the conditions of Polish Jews, this book tells how they attempted to deal with their situation as a despised and oppressed minority. It refutes common stereotypes of Polish Jews, particularly the nostalgic image of the East European shtetl. In fact the interwar Jewish community of Poland is shown to have been very complex and heterogeneous. Widely varying degrees of secularization and acculturation existed between the two patterns of the Orthodox~traditionalists and the assimilationists. The Jewish family, so often stereotyped as the bastion of unity, was torn during the interwar period by conflicting views and clashing values. In the political arena there was sharp disagreement among Polish Jews, for example, over the question of Zionism versus Socialism as the best means of solving the Jewish problem. Containing photographs of the Polish Jewish community in the interwar years, the book also utilizes excerpts from autobiographies and diaries of young Jews. Of particular interest to sociologists and historians, the book can be appreciated by anyone wanting an account of a poignant chapter in the Jewish struggle for freedom~a struggle that continues today.
