For, if we may judge by the condition of the Upper Nile3 still and the reedy desolation of the ancient Babylonian sites to-day, the original condition of the rivers must have been in great part swampy, unwholesome, and not naturally fitted for human habitation. In short, wholesale reclamation may have been a condition precedent of the agriculture of the regions, which, by nature, were less fitted for tillage than the loess lands of China, the black earth belt of Russia, and the virgin soil of the North American prairies.
