I think it desirable that the time of reporting should be specified if your lordships should concur in the proposal, in order that it should be perfectly clear that wo do not wish to shelve the matter by referring it to a Committee, but desire that that Committee should promptly take the matter up, and confer with any other Committee outside that may be acting in this matter. The President?I believe there is a Committee in existence to which the Secretary of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel acts as Secretary. The Bishop Of Gloucester And Bristol?Our Committee could confer with that Committee, and then report to this House. After what your Grace has said to us there remains very little to be added. But as this petition will now go forth to the whole Church, it would seem desirable that we should be perfectly clear as to the position of those Christians who are thus appealing to us. In the petition which your Grace has read, we find this statement in the third paragraph:?"That this branch of the Church declined to accept the definitions of the Council of Ephcsus, and has ever since been severed from the communion of the rest of the Church;" and in the fifth paragraph you will observe this statement:?" That, although isolated and persecuted, it has adhered to the Christian faith, and preserved the essentials of a Christian Church to the present day." Now, these two statements appear to be scarcely in harmony the one with the other.
