James Knowles: Victorian Editor and Architect - Paperback

1981, ISBN: 9780198126263

Hardcover, ID: 849287698

London.: Star Book., 1981. 272pp.. Reprint. Paperback. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall., Star Book., 1981, Oxford University Press. Very Good/Good. 1980. Hard Cover. 8vo 0198126263 Dust jacket complete, unclipped, slightly rubbed. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. xvi, 382 pages plates. Clean and tight. This substantial and original contribution to Victorian studies follows the successful careers of energetic father and son. James Knowles the elder, architect of the Grosvenor Hotel, was a dour, self-made Early Victorian who had risen to become a favoured architect of the aristocracy and who, by 1860, was involved in the construction of some of the largest buildings in central London. His son, the principal subject of this book, was the better known James Knowles, who after starting his career as an architect and designing Aldworth for Tennyson became an editor of considerable energy. He founded the Metaphysical Society, edited the Contemporary Review from 1870 until 1876, and then founded his own monthly review, the Nineteenth Century, which he edited for thirty-one years, from 1877 until 1908. This study examines the way he bridged the two disciplines of writing and architecture and it especially illuminates the interplay between literary and architectural medievalism. It is besides a story of considerable human interest, with much new and lively detail about Knowles as an aspiring and self-educated youth - individually engaging, and also typical of the mid-century. It was his deft handling of the special campaign that prevented the building of the Channel Tunnel, and he was the editor who staged the public controversy between Gladstone and Huxley over the scientific truth of the Bible. James Knowles often appears in the memoirs of other Victorians, but not until now has he had a biography of his own. Dr Metcalf F.S.A. has gained access to a wealth of unpublished letters from family sources, and she has researched deeply into his London buildings and finances. ., Oxford University Press, 1980
