Atlantic Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd., 2012. Hardcover. New. Probability theory is a well-established branch of mathematics that finds applications in a wide area of scholarly activities such as in physics, chemistry, geology, medicine, economics, sociology, engineering, operation research, etc. With his insightful exploration of the probabilistic connection between philosophy and the history of science, John Maynard Keynes, perhaps the best known of economists, breathed new life in the study of both these disciplines. His A Treatise on Probability is an outstanding mathematical work and is widely considered as an important contribution to the theory regarding the logical probability of proportions. What Keynes wrote is sacrosanct and has been retained in this book. His original book is in 31 chapters. In order to facilitate updating, we have combined some chapters and presented it in 26 chapters and converted it into third person from the original first person, keeping in view the modern trend. We have added important developments that have taken place since Keynes wrote the book, to provide updated material to the students and teachers of various disciplines. The book is divided into five parts. Part-I provides fundamental ideas on probability. Part-II contains fundamental theorems. Part-III deals with induction and analogy. Part-IV throws light on some philosophical applications of probability, while Part-V relates to the foundations of statistical inference. Bibliography has been updated by including more books. Index also stands revised and updated. Exclusive chapters ‘Practice Problems’ have been added in each part except Part-IV, containing a large number of solved exercises providing plenty of opportunity to the students for practicing skills and developing a sound understanding of the subject. Unsolved exercises have been given under ‘Test Yourself’. The book with updated matter and in its present layout will be useful for students and teachers of various disciplines including economics, physical sciences, engineering, geology, statistics, economics and sociology. Robert Skidelsky's three-volume biography of John Maynard Keynes has been acclaimed as the authoritative account of the great economist-statesman's life. Here, Skidelsky has revised and abridged his magnum opus into one definitive book, which examines in its entirety the intellectual and ideological journey that led an extraordinarily gifted young man to concern himself with the practical problems of an age overshadowed by war. John Maynard Keynes offers a sympathetic account of the life of a passionate visionary and an invaluable insight into the economic philosophy that still remains at the centre of political and economic thought. Robert Skidelsky is Emeritus Professor of Political Economy at the University of Warwick. His three volume biography of John Maynard Keynes (1983, 1992, 2000) received numerous prizes, including the Lionel Gelber Prize for International Relations and the Council on Foreign Relations Prize for International Relations. ( This three-volume life of the British economist should be given a Nobel Prize for History if there was such a thing . (Norman Stone)). The important collection of paintings, watercolours, drawings, illuminated books, engravings and manuscripts by William Blake in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, has never before been published in its entirety. This completely new and revised catalogue, begun by Sir Geoffrey Keynes and continued by members of the staff of the Museum, is edited by David Bindman, a leading Blake authority. Every painting and drawing is reproduced, some with additional details, as well as a selection of the related material, including the important group of portraits of Blake. The proposed bequest to the Museum from Sir Geoffrey Keynes is included as an appendix. The catalogue is arranged chronologically and divided into sections with introductory paragraphs which provide a complete survey of Blake's career." - from the blurb. Bookplate of Charles H.C. Dimensions: 9.1in. x 6.1in. x 1.3in.For nearly 300 years, capitalism propelled the worlds most successful economies to new heights of development. But a spate of global environmental disasters and severe economic crises compels thinkers to question whether the system continues to function. Leveraging historical perspective, extensive research, and case studies, The Crises of Capitalism builds a compelling argument that challenges the most fundamental assumptions of prevailing economic theory. Saral Sarkar exposes capitalisms flaws through the lens of ecosocialism, a philosophy that asserts that natural resources drive production and development. Keynes, Schumpeter, Marx, and Engles had no reason to believe that there would ever be a shortage of oil, minerals, water, or foodand that technological innovation could surmount any obstacle. But oil extraction has peaked, food is harder to come by, and the cost to maintain what natural resources remain has increased exponentially. Capitalism requires constant innovation to create growthbut as Sarkar establishes, even computers wouldnt exist without copper, gold, and zinc. The Crises of Capitalism exists at the intersection of environmental awareness and economic theory. Sarkar challenges predominant explanations for catastrophic events like the 2008 global economic crisis, revises the classic paradigm of growth, and points to evidence of systemic economic failure. In this provocative, revolutionary criticism, Sarkar suggests that like other long-abandoned economic theories, capitalism has reached its limits. This is an important book, and it is on the front edge of the thinking that has to come to bear on the real crisis the world is facing, of the impossible idea of growth forever and the economic model that is driving the planet into irreversible crises.
