WYKBOOKS 47718 HORDERN HOUSE BOOKSELLER'S CATALOGUE VOYAGES INVENTED WORLDS UTOPIAS DYSTOPIAS UTOPIAN FICTION DYSTOPIAN IDYLLS SOUTH LAND BIBLIOGRAPHY NOISBN, Laminated illustrated wrappers, 4to, pp, plates, ills. 180 items. From the introduction - "This is a catalogue of rare books from 1518 to 1970, focusing on utopias and alternate worlds, voyages to imaginary places by real people, and to real places by invented people, as well as fables and fantasies of time or place, and other wild and extravagant notions. Imaginary Voyages and Invented Worlds describes a collection of some of the most inventive works of literature of the last 500 years, from Sir Thomas More’s Utopia to Orwell’s twentieth century riposte 1984. Although the catalogue is based on the concept of utopian literature, and its literary companion the imaginary voyage, this is not simply an enumeration of literary and philosophical accounts of ideal worlds: it also deals with the ways in which the notion of an ideal society has often been tightly interwoven with the history of actual voyages, responding to and sometimes even influencing them. The line between genuine voyages of discovery and their fictional counterparts is not impermeable. Even the first work in the genre, Utopia itself, uses the voyages of Vespucci to lend credence to its story. In later publications the voyages of Dampier, Cook, La Pérouse and other navigators are frequenty used in the same way, providing camouflage for invention." The six sectioms of the catalogue comprise: I. Utopia (items 1-30); II. The South Land (31-77); III. Adventures of the imagination (78-123); IV. The idyll in French literature (124-156); V. Out of this World (157-169); VI. Dystopia (170-180). With a list of principal references consulted and Index. Near Very Good. Price-list laid in., Books<
