Different approaches to stability problems had been developed in the different branches of mechanics. In the field of elasticity, it was mainly the so- called static method and energy method which were used, while in the field of dynamics it was the kinetic method, which found its perfect expression in the theory of Liapunov. During the last few decades there has been a rapid development in the general theory of stability, stimulated, for example, by the investigations of H. ZIEGLER on elastic systems subject to non-conservative loads, and by the problems arising in aeroelasticity which are closely related to those introduced by ZIEGLER. The need was felt for kinetic methods which could also be used in investigating the stability of deformable systems. Efforts were made to adapt such methods, already known and developed in the stability theory of rigid systems, for application in the stability theory of continuous systems. During the last ten years interest was focused mainly on the application of a generalized Liapunov method to stability problems of continuous systems. All this was done in attempts to unify the various approaches to stability theory. It was with the idea of encouraging such a tendency, establishing to what extent a uniform physical and mathematical foundation already existed for stability theory in all branches of mechanics, and stimulating the further deve- lopment of a common stability theory, that a IUTAM-Symposium was devoted to this topic. Dimensions: 9.7in. x 6.1in. x 1.1in.State-of-the-art coverage of modern computational methods for the analysis and design of beamsAnalysis and Design of Elastic Beams presents computer models and applications related to thin-walled beams such as those used in mechanical and aerospace designs, where thin, lightweight structures with high strength are needed. This book will enable readers to compute the cross-sectional properties of individual beams with arbitrary cross-sectional shapes, to apply a general-purpose computer analysis of a complete structure to determine the forces and moments in the individual members, and to use a unified approach for calculating the normal and shear stresses, as well as deflections, for those members cross sections. In addition, this book augments a solid foundation in the basic structural design theory of beams by: Providing coverage of thin-wall structure analysis and optimization techniques Applying computer numerical methods to classical design methods Developing computational solutions for cross-sectional properties and stresses using finite element analysesIncluding access to an associated Web site with software for the analysis and design of any cross-sectional shape, Analysis and Design of Elastic Beams: Computational Methods is an essential reference for mechanical, aerospace, and civil engineers and designers working in the automotive, ship, and aerospace industries in product and process design, machine design, structural design, and design optimization, as well as students and researchers in these areas. It could also be used for self- study, given its pedagogical structure and the numerous solved problems which prepare for modem physics and technology. One of the original aspects of this work is the development together of the basic theory of tensors and the foundations of continuum mechanics. Why two books in one? Firstly, Tensor Analysis provides a thorough introduction of intrinsic mathematical entities, called tensors, which is essential for continuum mechanics. This way of proceeding greatly unifies the various subjects. Only some basic knowledge of linear algebra is necessary to start out on the topic of tensors. The essence of the mathematical foundations is introduced in a practical way. Tensor developments are often too abstract, since they are either aimed at algebraists only, or too quickly applied to physicists and engineers. Here a good balance has been found which allows these extremes to be brought closer together. Though the exposition of tensor theory forms a subject in itself, it is viewed not only as an autonomous mathematical discipline, but as a preparation for theories of physics and engineering. More specifically, because this part of the work deals with tensors in general coordinates and not solely in Cartesian coordinates, it will greatly help with many different disciplines such as differential geometry, analytical mechanics, continuum mechanics, special relativity, general relativity, cosmology, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, etc ..Soort: Met illustraties; Taal: Engels; Afmetingen: 33x234x156 mm; Gewicht: 1,03 kg; Verschijningsdatum: januari 2003; ISBN10: 1402010559; ISBN13: 9781402010552; , Engelstalig | Hardcover | 2003, Studie & Management, Exacte wetenschappen, Aardwetenschappen, Studie & Management, Exacte wetenschappen, Natuurkunde, Studie & Management, Techniek & Technologie, Techniek & Mechanica, Studie & Management, Exacte wetenschappen, Wiskunde & Statistiek, Kluwer Academic Publishers

This volume combines an illustration of the theory of tensors and the foundations of continuum mechanics. Firstly, a detailed tensor analysis is developed in Cartesian and general coordinates. Definitions, propositions, and examples relative to operations on tensors, canonical isomorphism, Euclidean vector spaces, exterior algebra, point spaces, metric element, Christoffel symbols, covariant and absolute derivatives, adjoint, differential operators, and many other concepts are introduced in a rigorous and practical way. The topic is not merely viewed as an autonomous mathematical discipline, but as a preparation for theories of physics such as general relativity theory, fluid-dynamics, engineering, and differential geometry. Secondly, developed in symbiosis with tensor analysis, continuum mechanics thoroughly covers Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions, deformations, kinematics of continua, fundamental laws, principle of virtual work, linear elasticity and more. This work lays the groundwork for more technical subjects as strength of materials, plasticity, viscoelasticity, and nonlinear continuum mechanics. The material is presented with great pedagogical care, a summary of formulae and a glossary of symbols are provided, as well as ninety-five solved problems. The book is suitable as a text for third year students of mathematics, physics and engineering, and for anyone wishing to acquire insight into the mathematics of mechanics, the mathematics of physics, the mathematics of engineering, continuum mechanics, elasticity and viscoelasticity, linear and multilinear algebra, or matrix theory.
