Local traditions are held by many peoples in the area that those two river valleys were among the first ever to be settled by Noah's descendants. According to a 5th century AD Armenian tradition, ertain grandee named Aranhas been appointed by the legendary Armenian king Vagharshak the first governor of this province. Ancient Armenian authors, Movses Khorenatsi and Movses Kaghankatvatsi, name of it Aran the ancestor inhabitants of Artsakh and next province Utik, the descendant of Sisak (the ancestor and eponym next province Sisakan, differently Siunik), and through itthe descendant of Haik, the ancestor and eponym all Armenians. For the first time Karabakh is mentioned in inscriptions Sardur II of King of Urartu (763-734 BC) found in village Tsovk in Armenia, as the country "Urtekhini". Thenin our dataa break down to the Roman epoch. A following mentionalready at Strabo which characterizes "Orhistena" (Artsakh) as "the area of Armenia exposing the greatest number of horsemen". It is unclear when Orkhistena became a part of.
