None of these instruments and-appliances exist in nature, nor are they suggested by any natural model: they are exclusively the fruit of man''s invention, and they are fashioned by his hands.('') Much has been said and written upon ideal beauty in art: but it is certain that a picture or statue, though it may not be a portrait, cannot improve upon nature.() It can only represent the best individuals, leaving out accidental defects. If it creates something which does not exist in nature, it makes a monster.
