Paternoster Row, London: John F. Shaw and Co. [c. 1900], 1900. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Hardback. Decorative cloth. Attractive design on red cloth. Bright and clean boards. Ever so slightly faded at the spine, a little bruising to spine ends and some light rubs. The binding is nice and firm. Publication date not stated. This was first published in 1872; however this copy is a later edition (stated new edition on the title page), from c. 1899-1900. Sunday School prize presentation bookplate on the front pastedown, dated 1900. The pages have significantly browned and have a distinct old paper aroma. Some light foxing to the outer closed textblock edges. Small bump to a the very edge of a few pages in the middle of the text. Floral patterned endpapers. pp. 378, 16.., John F. Shaw and Co. One of a limited edition of only 60 copies. 5 chapters, bibliography, index, 58 illustrations. This book traces the life of James Orrin (1828-93) from his arrival in Mumbles from his native Colchester in 1852 to take up the post of Master of the British School and subsequent position as Sub-postmaster of the Mumbles Post Office situated at Commercial Place, Southend. He was appointed successively as Collector of Parish rates and Assistant Overseer of the Poor for Oystermouth as well as Clerk to the Oystermouth Local Board of Health. Also he held several minor offices such as secretary of the Assembly Rooms, secretary of the Mumbles Benefit Building Society and Sun Insurance agent. His marriage in 1854 to a local Mumbles girl, Alice Jones, produced a large family, four of whom found employment in the Postal Service. both in Swansea and Mumbles Post Offices. As a Baptist James Orrin attended Bethany Baptist Chapel, West Cross where he was appointed Deacon in 1858 and soon after Superintendent of the Sunday School and Conductor of Music. James Orrin's life is traced against the background of local events such as the Mumbles Railway Mailbag robbery in 1865, the formation of the Oystermouth Local Board of Health in I 875, the Mumbles Lifeboat disaster in 1883 and the important improvements brought about in the public health of the district by the Local Board of Health which resulted in Mumbles becoming a fashionable holiday resort by the end of the nineteenth century. As Clerk to the Board, James Orrin played a prominent role in these developments and together with his other official duties he was regarded as the most trusted and respected person in the community, in fact, a veritable pillar of Mumbles society. .
