[SR: 7506304], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780882548128], Hippocrene Books, Hippocrene Books, Book, [PU: Hippocrene Books], Hippocrene Books, The career of King Haakon VII of Norway (1872 - 1957) was an extraordinary one. He was born Prince Carl, the second son of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, and in his early thirties was a professional naval officer with no special prospects. He was, however, noted for his intelligence, strong character and good looks; and his marriage to the daughter of King Edward VII, at a time when Britain's power was at its peak, had enhanced his prestige. Then in 1905 a long-gestated movement of nationalism in Norway overthrew the century-old union, under the Swedish crown, between that country and Sweden. Norway and its political leaders seemed about equally divided between outright republicans and those who wanted a new king from one of Europe's royal families. Prince Carl emerged as a strong candidate but refused to accept the kingship, when it was offered to him, without a plebiscite: one was according held and he became Norway's king. He filled that office with unfailing sagacity and discretion for the next fifty-two years, and with true heroism at the time of the Nazi invasion of Norway in 1940, when he was already an elderly man. Throughout the rest of the war, he worked unremittingly in the patriotic cause. From his return in 1945 till his death, he occupied a pre¬eminent position in the hearts of his very democratically-inclined people. This is above all the story of Haakon the man, revealed in the accounts of those who knew him well and in his own private letters, most notably to King George V, Queen Mary and King George VI. It is also an account of the individual way in which constitutional monarchy developed in Norway, under the influence of Haakon's own personality, with beneficial effects that continue today., 1000, Subjects, 1, Arts & Photography, 2, Biographies & Memoirs, 3, Business & Money, 3248857011, Calendars, 4, Children's Books, 12290, Christian Books & Bibles, 4366, Comics & Graphic Novels, 5, Computers & Technology, 6, Cookbooks, Food & Wine, 48, Crafts, Hobbies & Home, 8975347011, Education & Teaching, 173507, Engineering & Transportation, 301889, Gay & Lesbian, 10, Health, Fitness & Dieting, 9, History, 86, Humor & Entertainment, 10777, Law, 17, Literature & Fiction, 173514, Medical Books, 18, Mystery, Thriller & Suspense, 20, Parenting & Relationships, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 21, Reference, 22, Religion & Spirituality, 23, Romance, 75, Science & Math, 25, Science Fiction & Fantasy, 4736, Self-Help, 26, Sports & Outdoors, 28, Teen & Young Adult, 5267710011, Test Preparation, 27, Travel, 283155, Books
