[EAN: 9780880293976], Fine, [PU: Dorset Press (New York)], Jacket, Hardback. Prior to 1832 no provision for the practical study of anatomy existed in Great Britain, Ireland, the United States or Canada. There was, therefore, only one method of obtaining an ample supply of material for anatomical study : steal it. A chilling, someimes unbelievable, always fascinating account of the men of the 18th and early 19th centuries who were called "resurrectionists" or in less flattering terms "sack-'em up men." The object of the book is to give a dispassionate and understanding account of a few of these men who spent their lives in securing material for the study and teaching of anatomy; and to explain the legal and social conditions of the time that made grave robbing necessary. Some of the most brilliant minds in medical history, including William Harvey, Sir Charles Bell, Thomas Young and Edward Jenner, were forced by the conditions of the time to obtain their practical knowledge of anatomy by the dissection of bodies which had been stolebn. But these doctors, who gained their knowledge of anatomy by patronising grave robbers, did so purely for the advancement of science, to learn more about the human body so that they might become better doctors. The supreme irony is that their only purpose in disturbing the dead was to heal the living. Profusely Illus. including Text Figures + Index. 216pp. 8vo. hardcover. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. Nr. F. in lightly sunned nr. f. dw.
