In millions of mummified corpses of kings and commoners, animals, birds and beetles, Ancient Egypt has left a unique heritage for subsequent civilizations.Inside the richly decorated mummy cases and under many layers of blackened bandages, the gaunt faces, their flesh drawn back over a perfectly preserved bone structure, continue to speak to us over three thousand years and more, as can no other relics of past history.Ange-Pierre Leca is a French medical specilaist who has made a study of the most recent research (then 1976) on the mummies - in France, the United States and Britain, as well as in Egypt itself. In 'The Cult of the Immortal' he describes the extraordinary range of insights into the ancient Egyptian way of life that the mummies have at last revealed.Scientific analysis has shown us what food the Egyptians ate, the state of their teeth, the diseases they suffered from, as well as details of the elaborate process of embalming. The discovery that ancient Egyptians suffered from heart disease, for instance, has encouraged modern doctors to look again at a condition they had seen as phenomenon of twentieth century Western man.'The Cult of the Immortal' affords us a unique glimpse into the life of a people of the remote past:into their belief in the continuity of life through death, which obsessed them with death but also with the joy of living;into their social organisation and health;into their feeling for the natural world, which led them to 'take with them' into the other world dogs and cats, ibises, monkeys and scarab beetles by the thousands. And we are not the first to be fascinated by the mystery of the mummies:throughout the centuries their tombs have been robbed, first for the treasures that surrounded them, then for the corpses themselves, to satisfy the mediaeval European demand for the medicinal properties believed to lie in powdered mummy flesh. . . . Egyptian mummies thus speak to us not only about themselves, but about the peculiarity of human history and human belief. In this absorbing book the people of Ancient Egypt are seen in a new and more intimate light, and their legacy for succeeding generations is placed in a context that embraces superstition, greed and the whole unchanging gamut of human frailties.Ange-Pierre Leca studied medicine in Paris and specialised in rheumatology. He has had a lifelong interest in the history of Ancient Egypt and has published two books on medicine in the time of the pharaohs. He is a frequent lecturer and braodcaster on matters relating to Ancient Egyptian health and culture.See also rja2163, rja2164 and rja2166 for similar title/topics., LONDON.SOUVENIR PRESS,1976., LONDON.MICHAEL O'MARA BOOKS,1992.UK,small Qrto HB+dw/dj, 1st edn.NFINE/NFINE.Neat,ink,gift presentation inscrptn to front pastedown, but behind dw/dj's front, inner flap and no price-clip to dw/dj.Colour photographic dw/dj with minimal shelf-wear and negligible creasing to edges - no nicks or tears present.Very light bumping with reciprocal creasing to both head+foot of spine/backstrip.Top+fore-edges bright and clean, contents tight and near pristine.Unblemished, publisher's original plain black cloth bds with bright, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and plain white eps with a small blemish/spot to ffe and inscrptn already mentioned.Small Qrto [approx 10" tall x 7" wide], 9-176pp includes b/w photographic half-title, b/w portrait photographic frntis, title-page, contents list, intro, 13 chapters, profuse b/w photographs, some b/w illus/maps etc., chronological table, references, biblio and an index. Natsef-Amun was a priest and scribe at Karnak in Ancient Egypt. He lived and worked in the reign of Ramesses XI, more than 3,000 years ago. When he died his body was mummified and buried in a manner befitting his rank.During excavations in the 19thC at Deir el Bahri, near Thebes, his coffin and mummy were found and transported to Europe. The mummy was eventually purchased by a Leeds banker who presented it to the Leeds Philosophical Society whose members carried out a scientific and medical examination in 1828.This was one of the first examinations of its kind, and found a body 'in an unusually perfect state of preservation' which had been mummified in the elaborate way described by Herodotus and other classical writers. The Leeds investigation naturally reflected the scientific limitations of the day, and when Dr Rosalie David and the members of the Manchester Mummy Research Project were given the opportunity to perform a new examination using all the new scientific techniques available, they welcomed the chance.Using radiology, CT-scans, endoscopy and histology, serology and dental studies, a modern autopsy was performed on Natsef-Amun more than 3,000 years after his death.Using virtually non-destructive techniques, the examination team has made fascinating discoveries not only about the death of Natsef-Amun (was he strangled?) but also about his life.We find that he was in his middle forties at the time of his death, somewhat tall for the period, with a wrinkled brow and the usual shaven head of a priest.Illustrated with dozens of fascinating photographs, 'The Mummy's Tale' brings to life in extraordinary detail a man who was 'god's servant' in the temple at Karnak a thousand years before the birth of Christ., LONDON.MICHAEL O'MARA BOOKS,1992., Heffer & Sons, Cambridge, 1927. 1st edition..
